IMPENDING
- The three-year-old son of
LONHRO
scored a
strong win in the 2017 Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap
run at Doomben over 1350m.
Trainer Darren Beadman for Team Godolphin
scored his biggest individual win as a trainer adding to his
94 Group 1 Wins
as a jockey.
Darren hands over the reins shortly to James Cummings who takes over as the head trainer for Godolphin.
A brilliant track gallop by Impending leading up to the Stradbroke Hcp had trainer Darren Beadman confident heading into the $1.5m Group 1 over 1350m.
Impending
was one of two three-year-olds taking on the older horses in the Winter Racing Carnival’s premier sprint and Beadman said that his
Lonhro colt had put himself right into contention
following his outstanding work on Tuesday morning at the Gold Coast.
“Since his last run he’s worked really well and actually put in an outstanding piece of work at the Gold Coast on Tuesday,”
Beadman said.
However Beadman and Corey Brown had to work out a smart race place after
Impending
came up with barrier eighteen in the original draw in the sixteen horse plus five emergencies Stradbroke Handicap field.
“Unfortunately, the barrier is going to make it tougher for him, but he’ll go into the race in great form, very fit and very well,”
Beadman said.
Impending
had been racing consistently over the 2017 Sydney Autumn Carnival without finding the winner’s stall and headed to Queensland on the back of a third to Derryn in the Group 2 $600,000 Arrowfield 3yo Sprint (1200m) at Randwick on April 8.
Beadman and Brown gave Impending every opportunity and Brown rode to perfection.
Impending
was having his first run at the Doomben track when claiming the $1.5 million Group 1 event.
At his most recent run in the Group 1 Kingsford-Smith Cup (1300m), Impending had finished eighth in the boggy turf at Eagle Farm behind the Kris Lees trained Clearly Innocent.
Back on top of the ground, he was at his best and lived up to his trackwork and claimed the Stradbroke his first win since the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill last September.
Ridden by Corey Brown from a wide gate,
Impending
became the first three-year-old Stradbroke Handicap winner since Sincero (2011).
It was a great line out of the gates bar Counterattack who missed the jump, Jungle Edge showing his customary early speed led before fading to finish last.
As the turn for home approached, Burning Front was fighting for the lead with In Her Time.
The mare was up front and travelling well towards the line, looking the winner before the late run from
Impending
who came with an outstanding finish to take it out.
Corey Brown brought
IMPENDING
down the outside to nail runner-up In Her Time whilst Clearly Innocent finished third.

MPENDING wins the Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap at Doomben
“It was a good win,”
Corey Brown said.
“I know he carried no weight…but I was a little bit concerned about [the barrier].
“He needs room this horse. The more room he has the better he is.
“It was all over by the time I got to about the 500m.
“He didn’t run away from them, but he still won really well.”
The Godolphin team are now eyeing the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival for
Impending

Group 1 Manikato Stakes
(1200m) at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate eve and the
Group 1 Darley Classic
(1200m) down the Flemington straight during the Melbourne Cup Carnival possible targets.
