GAI’s VIEWS ABOUT PEIRRO

The brilliant racetrack career of Pierro has been well documented.

14 starts, he never missed a place, unbeaten at 2 and he won five Group 1 races.

The colt won over $4.5 million dollars on the track.

What is sometimes over looked is the fact that had this stallion run for another season, he no doubt would have made a champion middle distance horse.

He had all the speed and power as a two-year-old but his pedigree reads as if he were destined to become a champion at 2000m.

Pierro’s sire line reads Lonhro, Octagonal, Zabeel, Sir Tristram. There is not a better staying / middle distance sire line in the Southern Hemisphere.

On his dam’s side, apart from Sadler’s Wells, all Pierro’s relations have the (IRE) suffix after their names. This does not guarantee stamina but it certainly does help!

Results make the pedigree and Pierro in his brief time on the track showed that a colt who may have been purchased for a Cox Plate, could still dominate over the shorter trips.

In his career in races under a mile Pierro easily beat Snitzerland, Samaready, All Too Hard, More Joyous, Mufhasa and Rebel Dane.

All these horses have won Group 1 races at 1400m or under; many are multiple Group 1 winners.

Gai said she “cannot wait to get the sons and daughters of one of her best ever horses into the stable.”

PIERRO’S EARLY HISTORY

Pierro was bred by Darley.

He is by their champion sire Lonhro.

Pierro was famously sold by Darley as a weanling at Magic Millions breeding stock sales and then re-offered at the Gold Coast yearling sale six months later by Musk Creek Farm.

Liking what she saw, Gai Waterhouse purchased Pierro for $230,000.

To cut a long story short, he proved a superstar on the racetrack and was bought by Coolmore Stud in a multi-million dollar deal that sees him now as one of the most promising young sires in the Australia.

AT THE 2016 MAGIC MILLIONS SALES

Pierro the Golden Slipper winner, led the first season sire division averages this year at the 2016 Magic Millions Yearling Sales with $262,569 (37), in what was a competitive race with his former racetrack rival All Too Hard $221,842 (38) who finished 3rd, with Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom (USA) splitting the pair on the averages table $250,000 (3) however to be fair, Animal Kingdom did only have three yearlings sell.

It was a nervous start for vendors of Pierro’s in the first 90 minutes of trading.

We purchased lot 44 on the 90 minute mark of the sale and prior to that there had been 4 lots by the sire offered through the ring.

Lot 11 colt ex Alessandra was the first offered but unfortunately had some significant conformation issues and was a foal share so needed to be sold unreserved. It was knocked down for $50,000.

Lot 28 was next a filly ex Aqua D’Amore. We were keen to buy this filly however having purchased the More Than Ready ½ sister last year for $100,000 we couldn’t justify offering more than 2 x Service Fee. We bid to $140,000 but lost out when it was sold for $150,000.

Lot 33 was a colt ex Assail. He had been purchased as a weanling for $260,000 and was offered by the vendor to make a profit but was Passed In at $240,000.

Lot 38 was next a colt from Augusta Proud. It too failed to find a home when passed in for $200,000 Reserve $300,000.

With this start to the sale our colt was next at Lot 44.

He had been sold as a weanling for $100,000 and was offered by Coolmore Stud as agent. With an excellent pedigree rating of A+ 1,421% and believing the sale would end up very strong as we went deeper into the sale, we had anticipated he was a better buy that the Aqua D’Amore filly that we went to $140,000 and missed.

We valued him being early in the sale at 2.5 times service fee at $175,000 but because the sale was still its settling phase, we felt that he would be great buying at $140,000 - $150,000.

So we were delighted to be holding the bid at $120,000 and not having that bid bettered, we believed at that early start to the sale we had a steal and that is exactly how things played out as the stock soared to a $262,568 average and $200,000 median.
 

2 x MILLION DOLLAR BABES FOR
PIERRO AT MAGIC MILLIONS

Pierro made a dream start to his career with two of his yearlings selling for $1.5 million and $1.4 million which put them in 2^nd and 3^rd place as the sales leading lots. In fact, only 4 yearlings sold for over $1m.

The Pierro’s were only behind the Snitzel – Mirror Mirror colt that sold for $1.6m whilst another Snitzel – Flidais colt was in 4^th spot selling for $1.1m. There were 2 yearlings – a Snitzel and a Fastnet Rock which both brought $1m.

Stellar youngsters by Golden Slipper winner Pierro were headline makers at the 2016 Magic Millions Yearling Sale at the Gold Coast with a colt from Skates fetching $1.5 million and a filly from Monsoon Wedding selling for $1.4 million.

Offered by John Camilleri’s Fairway Thoroughbreds, the colt from Skates was bought by Coolmore Stud and partners. He is a half-brother to Golden Slipper winner Vancouver, (who will stand at Coolmore later this year when he retires) and also Group 1 winner Juste Momente.

Bidding opened at $500,000 and progressed in $100,000 increments until the hammer fell in favour of Tom Magnier at $1.5 million.

“We’re delighted to have the horse, we know the family very well and obviously we’re very excited about Pierro,” Magnier said.

“The one good thing about racing horses down here is we have some great partners we race with and we’ll put a partnership together for this colt,

“We’ll take the horse home, have a think about a trainer and go from there.

“It’s a very good individual from a very good family by an exciting young stallion so we knew we were going to have to pay for him – hopefully we got it right.”

The Pierro - Monsoon Wedding filly was consigned by Coolmore, who bought her dam at the Teeley Assets Dispersal in 2014 for $2.3 million. She was knocked down on behalf of buyer John Sikura of Hill ‘N Dale Farm in Kentucky.

The dam of four stakes performers including Group 3 winner Precious Lorraine and stakes-winner Lucky Raquie, Monsoon Wedding is a full sister to Redoute’s Choice and is now in the Northern Hemisphere where she is due to foal to Galileo.

This colt was also on GAI's TOP LOTS LIST.


Gai felt the this son of PIERRO represented a wonderful opportunity to be a precocious, early coming, jump and run individual. He was an athletic, very masculine - a genuine Post Christmas 2yo Running Type.

It was agreed prior to the auction that Dynamic would have first option to bid and buy the colt if she was in our budgeted range however Gai would then bid if we had reached our limit, as she was determined to see the the colt at her stables - Tulloch Lodge.

Our veterinarian Dr John Walker inspected the yearling prior to purchase and believed this youngster to be a quality individual and a chance of being a successful equine athlete with no visual clinical issues likely to prevent it from reaching its racing potential.

Before purchase, the 42 X-Rays deposited in the sale ground X-Ray Repository facility were examined. There were no abnormal findings noted. The horse was approved by Dr. Walker for Dynamic Syndications to purchase in the salering.
