ZOUSTAR: His Story
Australia’s two dominant stallions of the past decade, Encosta de Lago and Redoute’s Choice, combine in the pedigree of brilliant sprinter Zoustar who made his start to stud duties with spectacular success.
The dual Gr.1 winner is the first horse to win the Golden Rose and the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Ascot Vale) double.
Zoustar (ex Zouzou by Redoute’s Choice), was a $140,000 Magic Millions purchase and heads his sire Northern Meteor’ honour board of successes with six wins and a second in nine starts and earnings of $1.4m.
His Career:
Fresh from a trial win over 900m (beating Charlie Boy) on April 2, trainer Chris Waller opted to give his talented juvenile his first start in an 1100m 2YO maiden at Canterbury on April 17, 2013 and he scored a strong win on a slow track having 1.75 lengths over Tweet at the finish.
He lived right up to that form next time out on May 4 when he led most of the way to claim at $100,000 juvenile event at Hawkesbury by a length from Divine Calling, running the 1300m in 1:17.0 and prompting jockey to declare, “It was a comfortable win, it was only his second run and he’s still learning his trade, but my word he gave me a great feel and we will be hearing a lot more from him if he goes to Brisbane.”
The trainer exercised that option and he lined up in the BRC Sires’ Produce-Gr.2 (1350m) on May 25.
Zoustar led home the field of 15 by 1.25 lengths, relegating the talented Vilanova and Bound for Earth into the minors, running 1:20.53 on a track rated dead.
He wasn’t disgraced in his final start as a juvenile when in Gr.1 company next time out (June 8) finishing a half-length second to another Northern Meteor, the gelded Romantic Touch, in the $500,00 J.J. Atkins (1600m), with Paximadia third in the field of 13.
He was back in action early in the new season with a fourth in the Run to the Rose-Gr.3 (1200m) at Rosehill on August 31, beaten 1.75 lengths by Va Pensiero.
Next start was another Gr.1 assignment, this time in the Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill on September 14. Settling well back in the field of 15 and skirting wide most of the way to avoid trouble, the three year-old colt swept around the field with 200m to go and with Jimmy Cassidy working hard got the better of Dissident on the line to win by a neck, with Bull Point 1.5 lengths back in third. The winner’s time was 1:22.51.
There was another win next time out, at Randwick on October 5, when Zoustar captured the Roman Consul Stakes-Gr.2 (1200m in 1:09.45) by 4.25 lengths from Barbed and Open Book, signalling he was one of the best young sprinters in the land. Clearly several major studs thought so too and in the end Widden won the bidding duel for the talented three year-old, paying a rumoured $14m, with contingencies, so there was plenty on the line when he lined up in the VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes (Ascot Vale) Gr.1, down the Flemington straight on November 2 (including an additional $4m payment to his former owners if he won).
In the end he simply powered away, cruising to the lead at the 300m to win the $500,000 1200m sprint, running 1:09.23 on a dead track to beat Not Listenin’tome by two lengths and with Lion of Belfort third in the field of 11.
Zoustar’s Coolmore Stud Stakes victory was some 1.2 seconds quicker than Buffering’s Gr.1 WFA win a week later. His time was 1.3 seconds faster than his sire and grandsire Northern Meteor and Encosta de Lago clocked in their Coolmore victories.
“He’s a horse we’ve been following since day one and it’s been very exciting to watch his career unfold from a debut win at two to being the best three year-old sprinting colt of his generation,” Widden owner Antony Thompson said after the colt’s second Gr.1 success. “Northern Meteor made such a huge impact for us in the short time that we were lucky enough to have him, so it seems only right that his best son should follow in his footsteps and join us at Widden.”
Although Zoustar was impressive, his trainer Chris Waller predicted bigger things in the autumn. “He’s still not quite there yet, he’s still learning. He didn’t get any cover which didn’t help, he was always going to be vulnerable the last 200m. I think there’s still a lot of improvement to come.”
His new connections, Widden sold 25% to Woodside Park (where the horse did cover his second and fourth seasons) as well as an interest to Sheikh Fahad Al Thani’s Qatar Bloodstock, began planning an assault on Royal Ascot and the horse was given a break until early 2014 when he appeared in two trials before an unplaced run in the Canterbury Stakes-Gr.1 on March 15 and then a trial win on March 31 before shipping out to England.
Sheikh Fahad said. “I was able to inspect Zoustar following his dominant win the Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington. This colt represents everything that is great about Australian horses. He is strong, masculine and incredibly fast and I am very excited about the prospects of him racing in Europe and ultimately retiring to stud.”
The horse was showing sparkling form in his gallops in the UK when he suffered a small strain to the lateral aspect of the proximal suspensory ligament. Although not serious, the injury meant three months off racing and the decision was made to retire the valuable colt immediately.
“It is extremely disappointing that we are not able to compete at Ascot and the owners and I are devastated by this. The horse had travelled extremely well to England and for me it was the start of what would have been the experience of a lifetime. Zoustar’s ability, attitude and physical attributes as well as his gentlemanly temperament make him a tremendously special horse to me,” Waller said when announcing the horse’s retirement as the winner of six of his nine starts for earnings of $1,411,680 and a World Thoroughbred Ranking of 117 (in 2013).
Zoustar was first in the ring as a weanling and sold to KP Thoroughbreds for $85,000 at the 2011 MM National Sale. Kulani Park and offered him as a yearling at the Gold Coast seven months later where the colt was snapped up for $140,000.
ZOUSTAR becomes a Shuttle Stallion:
Zoustar, part-owned by Qatar Racing, will stand at Tweenhills Stud in Gloucestershire for the 2019 breeding season.
Currently based at Widden Stud in New South Wales, Zoustar will shuttle to the UK next season where he will join the Qatar Racing stallion roster. European breeders will have access to the most promising young stallion in the southern hemisphere.
The Australian 3YO champion sprinter made a sensational start to his stud career, siring three Group 2 winners in his first crop. These include Sunlight, the Magic Millions 2YO Classic and Silver Slipper Gr. 2 winner who then placed in the richest two-year-old race in the world, the Golden Slipper Stakes Gr. 1.
He also sired the Quinella in the Sires’ Produce Stakes Gr. 2 at Doomben with his sons Lean Mean Machine and Zousain.
Zousain who had previously won the Champagne Classic Gr. 2, then went on to finish runner up by a neck in the J.J Atkins Plate Gr. 1 over a mile.
With his progeny collecting over $3 million in prize money earnings to date, the handsome son of Northern Meteor has broken the all-time prize money record for an Australasian Champion first-season sire.
Zoustar also finished in third position on the two-year-old sires table last season behind Snitzel and I Am Invincible.
Again this season Zoustar is leading the way as a Second Crop sire.
Unsurprisingly Zoustar’s yearlings have proven extremely popular at the sales.
“The opportunity to stand the sensational Champion Zoustar at Tweenhills is the most exciting thing I have been involved with in my career. The buzz surrounding this horse and what he has achieved in Australia is deafening and to be able to stand him alongside Qatar Racing’s other sensational young stallions is an honour and a challenge that my team and I relish.” Said Daivid Redvers – from Tweenhills.
“From the first moment Sheikh Fahad and I saw Zoustar at Flemington we were convinced that we were witnessing something special and had to be involved. He has that rare mixture of precocity, natural speed, turn of foot, pedigree and physical presence you see in only a very few genuinely top flight stallions. We were spellbound and have been ‘all-in’ ever since.
“I’m not sure European breeders have ever been offered access to such an exciting Australian stallion at this point in his career and news has been received with tremendous support and enthusiasm from Europe’s leading farms.”
Antony Thompson, owner of Widden Stud, commented; “Zoustar standing at Tweenhills provides a rare chance to showcase one of our hottest young stallions in Europe. We were always confident that he is a stallion who would leave his mark and see great success in both hemispheres. He is a beautiful looking horse, a Champion racehorse with a great temperament, he stamps his stock who are every inch like their sire, and he has the potential to even surpass his own magnificent and much missed sire, Northern Meteor.”

Optimum Distance: 1200m
The Profile above shows the Age and Distance range of Stakes Winners bred with this same or closely designed breeding pattern. The larger the Blue Dots, the more winners in that category.
Professional Bloodstock Consultants such as Dean Watt of Dynamic Syndications spend countless hours researching pedigrees and their genetic patterns and are aware when these same pedigree patterns have been replicated deliberately by the breeder in the hope that they may have bred a champion racehorse.
Often however the breeder has accidentally or by pure chance produced a yearling to these patterns.
This is what sets our company at the pinnacle of its field.
KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE.

A PROVEN CROSS (also known as a NICK):
A NICK = SUCCESS
The GENETICS of our horse have been bred to a "PROVEN NICK"
Genetically – this horse has been bred to be a racetrack star.
When we went to the sales we were looking first and foremost for the individual.
It has to be an equine athlete.
However being aware that over 76% of Stakes Winners come from just 20% of the foal crop each year and we can identify this 20% of the foal crop as having a pedigree graded as above, so we will ONLY search for equine athletes that are based within this graded sub-group.
In an easy to understand "rule of thumb" example : there are approximately 16,000 foals born each year. On our statistical data, we identified that 20% (3,200) produce 76% of the STAKES WINNERS annually.
Therefore the opposite to the above equation is 12,800 yearlings produce just 24% of the STAKES WINNERS annually.
So, where would you rather go looking for a Stakes Winner ?
In a pool of 3,200 that produces 76% of Stakes Winners
or
in a pool of 12,800 yearlings that produces 24% of Stakes Winners.
Simply - We leave the rest for the other industry participants to consume.
Whichever set of statistical data you choose to accept and rely upon for information flow, it remains constant – Simply, on its pedigree, our horse was produced upon an exceptionally good mating with a significantly increased opportunity to produce an above average racehorse.
Since we have matched this pedigree to our individual’s excellent conformation, size, strength and athleticism, we are convinced this horse represents a wonderful opportunity for equine investment in a quality thoroughbred.
Whilst there can never be any guarantees in thoroughbred breeding or racing and this horse would be no exception to that fact, the reality is that we would always rather start with and take advantage of sets of statistics which are weighted heavily in our favour, than to purchase another horse only bred to be average in the first instance and then, having to pray for a miracle.
It’s not pure luck or an incredible set of coincidences that produces stakes class horses.
However it’s not until we do our due diligence work and we analyse the statistical data to produce these facts does the old proverbs ring true again:
"The apple doesn’t roll far from the tree"
"Keep drilling where oil has been found"
"Keep digging where you find gold"
Understanding this aspect of our industry is vital.
That’s why we have such outstanding racetrack success year after year after year.
The statistics speak for themselves.
That’s why its important to deal with a Specialist !
You can't buy experience !
With over 30 years as a Bloodstock Consultant and Syndicator on his resume, Dynamic Syndications Managing Director has no peers in his industry that come close to matching resumes.

OUR SALE NOTES:
Below was the commentary report Dean Watt wrote about the yearling during three (3) pre-sale selection criteria inspections prior to the lot being offered for sale.
Commentary in brackets has been added in for description purpose so non-horse industry participants may have a better understanding of Dean’s sales notes. The notes are:

A high quality example of the type of yearlings the sire ZOUSTAR produces
~ we wanted to buy the yearling and to give it to
ANNABEL & ROB ARCHIBALD

- Good width of jaw and corresponds with big Nostrils (for windflow capacity access)
- Conformationally front legs are excellent with nice short cannon (which is technically very good – means longer forearm covers more ground per stride)
- Powerful hindquarter with excellent length of to its croup and excellent hip:hock ratio (propulsion levers for driving forward)
- Well developed Gaskins (like Human biceps = strength) which are strong and deep into hocks
- Correct angulation to pasterns and shoulders (correct 60 degree angles)
- Hoofs are well structured and all 4 are symmetrical with good heels.
- Intelligent Head - Wide Forehead - Soft Kind Eye
- Has a strong reign (neck & distance from Poll to Withers)
- Strong well defined top line (back) with the withers set well back
- Excellent - Deep girth (Lung capacity)
- A top walker – purposeful, balanced, with fluid motion.
- Stands over good ground (length to back in correct proportion to balance of individual)
- Nice style of individual by the sire with great V8 motor (hindquarter = propulsion)
- Importantly this yearling Tracks Truly and has a Very Good Overstep (Propulsion)
Comments from 3 Leading Yearling Judges:

Dr Tim Roberts (Veterinarian)
"This Filly is a real Zoustar type, she has the fabulous Zoustar walk and head on her and she was a terrific buy."
"From a Half-Sister to two Gr1 Winners, she oozes class and clinically you just can’t fault her. I thought she was an absolute bargain, Dynamic bought a truly lovely Filly"

Dean Watt (Dynamic Syndications)
"The harder you work the luckier you get and never has that sentiment been more true than with this Filly."
"We thought we had no chance to buy her as I had valued her at $300,000 + and the way the ZOUSTAR'S were selling, I didn't think we had a hope, but halfway through Day 4 of the sale, she slipped through the net. It proves that you never know at an auction, so you have to do your due intelligence on every lot you like."
"She is low risk on X-ray and clean on Scope and she is a tremendously well put together individual."
"She is by the Sire of the moment out of a Daughter of Gr2 Winner NAKAAYA and she's from the 1/2 Sister to Gr1 Winners MARABI and ARISTIA so given her wonderful pedigree, she will always have terrific residual value. I am thrilled to own her and will keep her for a PRIVATE - OFF MARKET Opportunity restricted to our Dynamic owners! The Fact that Gerry Harvey purchased back in a Filly he bred is endorsement enough."

Rob Archibald (Co-Trainer):
"I am really delighted to be training this Filly for Dynamic Syndications and Gerry Harvey. She has a great pedigree, she is by the Sire of the moment and she was a really good looking and well put together individual."
"We loved her and so did Dynamic! We agreed to let the boys buy her so we could train her and therefore not bid against one another. Then when she was knocked down for only $250,000 - that was amazing. We knew we were training her but wanted to buy into her as well. We offered to buy half and Adam agreed and we were delighted to join forces."
"We have a few Zoustar’s in the stable and we really like them. They are easy to train and they can gallop. This Siteki Filly is an absolute belter and we are thrilled to own her in co-ownership and train her."

SELECTION PROCESS
Q) So - Why did we buy Her?
A) That's easy to answer !
Pedigree:
Commencing weeks prior to attending the sale complex:
When researching which lots to inspect in the weeks prior to the sale, we look for certain genetic factors that increase the chance of the yearling being a superior athlete.
This pedigree had certain ancestor duplications which we are seeking, to give what we consider, a balanced blend of speed and endurance. Full details of the Pedigree Evaluation is located in our Pedigree Notes Section of this website.
ENICK Rating Score: A 360%
GEONICK Rating Score: A++ 2,140%
Range Description: EXCELLENT
Conformation:
Saleyard notes on this horse were:

SIZE - SUBSTANCE - HIGH QUALITY -
GREAT ANGLES - BIG JAW / NOSTRILS -
ATHLETIC - REAL SPRINTER TYPE -
CLEAN X-RAYS - G1 ENDOSCOPE
Veterinarian:

Dr Tim Roberts - Contracted Veterinarian to Dynamic Syndications
Our veterinarian Dr Tim Roberts inspected the yearling prior to purchase and believed this youngster to be a quality individual and a chance of being a successful equine athlete with no visual clinical issues likely to prevent it from reaching its racing potential.
Before purchase, the 42 X-Rays deposited in the sale ground X-Ray Repository facility were examined. There were no abnormal findings noted.
The horse was approved by Dr. Roberts for Dynamic Syndications to purchase in the salering.
After purchase, an endoscopic test on the horse's airway was performed and the result was the horse had normal function.
Also a blood test was performed and revealed no abnormal findings.
Fair Market Value:
Considering this superb genetic pedigree, the commercial value of the sire, excellent athletic conformation and overall size, strength and scope, we rated this yearling as an "MUST HAVE" purchase.
Dean Watt as a licensed Commercial Agent and an erstwhile longstanding Member of the Bloodstock Agents Federation of Australia, is approved to offer Market Appraisals as to the Commercial Valuation of thoroughbreds.
Dean Watt evaluates each yearling that passes its Veterinary Inspection, as to the maximum Commercial Value after taking in such factors as:
* The Individual's Conformation
* Sales of Progeny with Similar Commercial Pedigrees by the Sire
* The Sire’s Service Fee both current and at date of Conception
* Sales of other progeny from the 1st & 2nd Dams in pedigree
based upon the Service Fee value of the sire of that mating.
* Any Sale recorded of the Dam herself.
* Racetrack Appraisal of the immediate family (Siblings / Dam).
* Working horses in the immediate family (Likelihood of the family
improving commercially by producing a Stakes Winner
in the near future)
* Historical Sale Average of the Actual Sale being Conducted.
* Current Economic & Political environment.
A specific formula is applied to each of these variables and a figure is determined. This is our Ceiling Price. The price we are prepared to bid up to in a bidding war in the Salering. The maximum price we set at which we will withdraw from the heat of battle.
We set a strict ceiling price on all the horses that pass Veterinarian Inspection and write that figure on the Catalogue Page of each lot that passes to ensure that we do not make bidding errors during the auction.
Having completed all our Due Diligence reviews based upon Pedigree, Conformation, Veterinary Acceptance and Market Appraisal, we are always prepared to bid up to our limit to secure what we considered is an outstanding individual.
Valuation Price:
Considering HER outstanding conformation and the strength and depth of the female family and the pedigree genetics scoring A++ 2,140 & 3 SW on the Cross this individual was secured at a price representing terrific value to the team at Dynamic.
Pre-Sale we had valued the yearling at $300,000 (+ one bid $310,000). Our valuation is based upon: the Sire ZOUSTAR in 2023 Conception Service Fee was $200,000 + GST and since has increased to $250,000 + GST (up from $192,000 in 2022; which was also up from $154,000 in 2021).
The Sire averaged at the 2026 Magic Millions $478,750 off a $200,000 Conception Service Fee = 2.4 times Service Fee.
In 2024 he averaged $475,000 off a $192,000 Service Fee = 2.5 times Service Fee
In 2023 he averaged $440,233 off a $121,000 Service Fee = 3.6 times Service Fee.
In 2022 he averaged $435,357 off a $154,000 Service Fee = 2.8 times Service Fee.
This filly we valued at a 1.5-times Service Fee off $200,000 + GST which is $300,000.
So to Secure her for $250,000 + GST which was our ceiling but is only 1.25 times Conception Service Fee is exceptional value.
Add-in that Gerry Harvey has backed his judgment buying back into the filly is also a high endorsement.
Originally, pre-Sale our Valuation of $300,000 - $310,000 would be "too expensive" for Team Dynamic to purchase for syndication. We simply won't pay that for any yearling.
To secure her for our ceiling or under would be a bargain, and if she fell into our level, up to $250,000 we would buy her, but at that price, we were convinced she would sail over our ceiling price and unfortunately we would miss out.
20 minutes before she walked into the ring we were advised by the vendor's manager that the boss was locked-in on $250,000 Reserve which was fantastic for us as we had a fighting chance.
We sat and watched her go through the salering. We ensured we were on the right leg in the ring and bid $200,000 which was countered and we bid again at $250,000. That was it - we were all in!
Then the auctioneer called that the filly was "On The Market at $250,000." When we jumped in and took the physiological advantage at $250,000 in meant that the next bid would be $275,000 and that would stress a few bidders.
That tactic worked and we were not countered - Job Done! She was ours at $250,000 + GST.
We had asked Gerry what were his plans, prior to the sales and he said he was happy to race her.
We were always giving the filly to ROB and ANNABEL ARCHIBALD if we purchased her at the reserve price but in advance we would like to know if Gerry was prepared to buy into the filly for 10% as an endorsement that he believed in the filly he bred.
Gerry agreed but said he "loved this filly and was happy to hear that Annabel & Rob would be the trainer."
So he countered and said "I would be delighted to stay in her for up to 25% if that suits you?"
We shook hands - Gerry would take up to a leg (25%) but would be prepared to sell down to a minimum 10% depending upon how many existing Dynamic Owners wanted to race her with us.
ROB and ANNABEL then asked after we purchased the filly could they buy 50% of the horse as they loved her like we did and wanted equity in her rather than just being the trainer. Naturally we said yes.
Therefore we only had between 25% up to a maximum of 40% to place privately.
To secure the filly at $250,000 + GST was outstanding value a 25% ($50,000) discount to our market appraisal of the true commercial value and this represented exceptional value that we now pass onto our owners.
A Pictorial Guide To Equine Conformation:
This diagram is offered to give clients an understanding of conformational defects that many horses possess.
It is part of our Due Diligence to reject horses with defects that are likely to increase the risk of injury or break down.
