Astute ARROWFIELD STUD Savouring Heat from THE AUTUMN SUN

For jockey James McDonald, it was as easy as Dundeel winning the ATC Australian Derby, when he was boldly stood in the irons over the final 30 metres on the odds-on favourite The Autumn Sun in Saturday's $2 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m).

The Autumn Sun turned in arguably the performance of the spring when he sat three deep throughout before powering away under James McDonald to win the Guineas by 4½ lengths easing down.

The son of champion sire Redoute's Choice gave his peers a galloping lesson when he burst away to win from Vassilator with the filly Oohood coming from back in the field to finish third.

However Arrowfield Stud boss John Messara, after buying a managing interest in The Autumn Sun last week said there still talks to be had before a definitive decision on the Cox Plate was made.

“It was very exciting and it’s safe to say the horse lived right up to our expectations on Saturday,” Messara said.

“It was amazing and to win a classic race like that was sensational - he’s got plenty of speed when he needs it.

“My inclination would be to keep the horse at around the mile but Chris Waller will know better than me on that.

“He still only weighs around 480 kilograms and he’s a decent sized horse - I think he’ll come back a better horse in the autumn and thankfully so does Chris Waller.

“Chris and I will talk to discuss the Cox Plate but seriously, I don’t want to be known as the man who shot Bambi if he did go and beat Winx.

“It’s a difficult decision obviously and Chris is being very fair and said to me ‘if you want to run, run’ but I will sleep on it and we’ll talk on Monday."

The Autumn Sun advances his record to 5 wins and 1 third from six starts with earnings of $2,321,521.

Saturday's Guineas win took his record to three wins at Group 1 level, the J J Atkins Stakes, Golden Rose and the Guineas, the only defeat being a desperately unlucky third when resuming in the Stan Fox Stakes.

Following the Caulfield Guineas win McDonald predicted The Autumn Sun would be “scary” next autumn, declaring him “still a baby”.

"I was lucky enough to be on a superstar," McDonald said.

Arrowfield recently purchased 50 per cent of the son of their breed-shaping champion Redoute's Choice who has an estimated value of $40 - $50 million as a stallion.

"It just seems Arrowfield is the rightful place for this colt's future at stud, Arrowfield's boss John Messara said.

"After all, we bred and sold him in partnership with The Aga Khan Studs, and we launched and stood his champion sire (Redoute’s Choice) and grand-sire (Danehill).

"He has physique, athleticism and pedigree, all of the highest order, and I couldn't be more excited about the prospect of standing him at Arrowfield." Messara added.

The Autumn Sun was a $700,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Arrowfield draft for Hermitage Thoroughbreds/ Waller Racing.

From a famed Aga Khan family, The Autumn Sun is the second foal of the unraced Galileo mare Azmiyna (IRE), who is a half-sister to Azamour (Night Shift).

Honoured as the Champion Older Horse in Europe, England & Ireland in 2005, Azamour's 6 wins included the Group 1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes and Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes, Group 1 St James's Palace Stakes and Group 1 Prince of Wales's Stakes.

Azmiyna has a yearling colt by Arrowfiled’s Not a Single Doubt and was covered in December last year by their champion sire Snitzel.

But it may not only be the Australian autumn to further enhance the reputation of The Autumn Sun with the world stage also calling for the son of Redoute’s Choice.
