All hail the King ! Chris Waller is the “New King on the Block” according to respected journalist Ken Callander. The long time journalist highlighted that Waller has taken over Gai Waterhouse’s mantle as the chief trainer of the Randwick carnival.
Waller whom is only 39 and has forged his way to the top of the Sydney trainers premiership and it’s a feat he’s very much proud of and humbled by.
Chris enjoyed a day that he will never forget at Randwick on Saturday where he trained the two feature Group 1 winners of the day and enjoyed further stakes success in the JRA plate.
Kelinni the first of the Waller trained treble, powered through the heavy conditions under his 60kg impost to confirm himself as a serious contender for this weekend’s Group 1 Sydney Cup at Randwick. Perfectly ridden by Nash Rawiller, Kelinni showed his rivals that he will be a horse to be reckoned with in the 3200m feature event.
In what was a brilliant hour and a half for the Waller stable Chris then turned his attention to the Group 1 Australian Oaks where he saddled up two runners.
The stable was confident their chargers could run bold races in the $550,000 Group 1 feature for 3yo fillies, however never in their wildest dreams did they believe that $4.40 second favourite Royal Descent would run away to win the time honoured event by a widening 10 Lengths. It was a display of such quality that she sent most racing enthusiasts heading for their record books in the attempt to identify performances of such a nature in a Randwick Group 1 feature.
With a Spring in their step the stable pushed on towards the feature mile race of the Australia, the BMW Doncaster Mile. Chris whom had previously won the race on two occasions with Triple Honour and Rangirangdoo, had the honour of saddling up 4 runners in this year’s $2 million renewal.
It was his light weight hope in Sacred Falls that carried the stable flag to victory, aided by a brilliant rails hugging ride by inform jockey Tommy Berry, the NZ bred colt scooted through along the fence to comfortably beat the Gai Waterhouse favourite, Pierro.
Not only has Waller been dominating the feature events during this carnival he has also enjoyed a run of success at midweek city level. Last Wednesday Waller enjoyed 6 city winners across Sydney and Melbourne including further stakes success with the highly talented mare Catkins in the PJ Bell. Chris now has an unassailable lead in the Sydney Trainers Premiership, he currently sits on 126.5 winners which is 64.5 wins clear of his closest rival Gai Waterhouse.
The Waller stable look set for another big weekend at Randwick with horses nominated in 7 out of the 8 races on the program.
