We only had one target in the 2022 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, and we had to wait until late on the second day of the sale for
LOT 405 to be presented.
Offered by Coolmore Stud (as Agent), he is a
much-admired Chestnut Colt from the
First Crop of JUSTIFY (USA) - World Champion; 2018 Horse of the Year and Undefeated Champion 3YO Colt of the USA, including the Winner of the US Triple Crown Race Series.
Importantly to Dynamic Syndications, this Colt is the First Foal of Dynamic Syndications own Gr2 Winner, Gr3 placed and Gr2, Gr3 and LR performed SAVAPINSKI (by Savabeel).
It’s exciting for us to buy such a lovely Colt, by a Champion Racehorse from our own high quality racemare.
SAVAPINSKI retired the winner of over
$300,000 in prizemoney and when she retired, she was
sold to clients of Coolmore Stud.
We had inspected our Colt on three occasions at the sales and knew he was exactly what we wanted.

JUSTIFY at Stud
However, we have been
very deliberate about the style of yearling that we were
interested in buying by the sire.
Justify is a big individual, and a touch upright through his pasterns and many of his progeny have inherited these traits from the sire.
In Australian conditions on turf tracks, the style we have searched for have been his
more athletic, loose moving types with good angels to their pasterns.
Lot 371 - JUSTIFY x PICKIN' TIME Filly $220,000 + GST
Lot 629 - JUSTIFY x TINGU Filly $150,000 + GST
At the Magic Millions we purchased two (2) JUSTIFY Fillies – Lot 371 ex Pickin’ Time (Fastnet Rock) for $220,000 and Lot 629 ex Tingu (FR) (Intello) for $150,000.
We were naturally excited to inspect the
COLT from SAVAPINSKI since the time the catalogues came out a few months ago.
LOT 405 - Our COLT by JUSTIFY x SAVAPINSKI
On type he lived up to expectations and was a naturally athletic individual.
We have purchased him to aim at the
Big 3yo Blue Riband Classic Races from 1600m to 2400m.
He is no speedy-squib type, he is for those
Owners that wish to race in elite races that our industry is founded upon, such as Guineas and Derbies.
We wanted to take him home from the first time we laid our eyes upon him. Then we came back with
our veterinarian Dr Tim Roberts rated him highly.
Tim then reading his X-rays identified they were low risk and his videoscope was Grade 1 (clean).
He was the
only yearling from the whole catalogue we truly wanted, that we believed we could afford.
Here is the video of him being paraded:

As the sale has progressed, money is being thrown around like confetti and it is getting harder and harder to buy a nice colt at value for money.
However, it was a tense set of circumstances that resulted in Lot 405 becoming Dynamic.
As we had
already purchased two fillies by the boom new sire for $220,000 and $150,000, here was
a colt that we rated highly from a mare that was so good to her Dynamic Owners.
Having done our
due diligence and worked through
our statistical data and veterinary reviews, he was Colt that we valued at
3 x times his Conception Service Fee of $60,000 + GST =
$180,000 + GST.
We are very disciplined at sales, setting a ceiling price and will only ever go over that amount by just one bid.
We were advised by the vendor that the
Reserve was to be set at $200,000 which was over our established market valuation of
$180,000. We asked could they consider reducing their reserve but the Coolmore client insisted that they wanted
$200,000, so we were out of play at that point.
However sometimes things happen at auction and it helps to be on the spot when they arrive.
When bidding commenced, we knew what they wanted, but we were adamant that we couldn’t pay that price.
We bid up to our ceiling of $180,000 in case we were the highest bidder and they changed their mind in the sale ring. However,
our bid of $180,000 was countered at $190,000 and that took us out of play.
To our surprise there wasn’t another counter bid and
at $190,000, true to their word, they passed the Colt in with a Reserve of $200,000.
We waited a couple of minutes until the dust settled and whilst waiting, we received a call from the Coolmore team asking if we wanted to buy the Colt at our
$180,000.
We politely declined as the horse had been passed in, and
now the advantage was with the buyer to strike a price.
We countered by confirming that we now only wanted to offer
$150,000 however since we have such a wonderful working relationship with Coolmore, we would be prepared to go to
$160,000. We were
countered at $170,000 but that was as low as their client would go. So, we had a
Mexican standoff at $160,000 and $170,000.
We offered to meet in the middle at $165,000 + GST if that could help get the deal done but we were
“all in” at that price.
Fortunately, Coolmore’s client kindly agreed and
the deal was struck at $165,000 + GST which was
$25,000 less than the amount they passed him in at, in the sale ring 10 minutes earlier.
The art of horse trading! Sometimes you win; sometimes you lose, today was our turn for a win!
We are delighted to have secured the colt for
$15,000 + GST less than we actually bid in the salering.
Most importantly, we are taking home our prime target – the first foal of our wonderful racemare SAVAPINSKI.
Over the coming days a trainer will be appointed and a price per share determined.
