Mornington Trainer MATT LAURIE has quickly established himself as a
vital Team Member in our Dynamic Trainer’s Ranks, and on Saturday he put the polish on
TASK AND PURPOSE who scored a
terrific win at Morphettville.
TASK AND PURPOSE ($10) ridden by jet pilot Todd Pannell, picked up $20,700 prizemoney when she won Race 5, the Grant Burge Handicap, a Benchmark 68 1300m for Mares. The race was run on a Soft 6 surface, in a time of 1:19.63 with a last 600m of 36.25 secs.
TASK AND PURPOSE defeated Aray of Sunshine 59kg ($5) by 0.4 length with The Ants Pants 54.5kg ($6) in third spot 1.2 lengths behind us.
TASK AND PURPOSE was ridden beautifully to instruction by
Todd Pannell. Our speed map had 3 designated on pace runners, one of those being
TASK AND PURPOSE. We didn’t want to lead but rather take a forward position, one pair back if possible and present at the top of the straight.
An 11 out of 10 ride by Todd gave
TASK AND PURPOSE the perfect run.
Todd had
TASK AND PURPOSE in front after 50m but took hold to allow On Appro ($31) to push up underneath him, whilst the favourite Simply Believing ($4.40) strolled around us to take the lead. That had
TASK AND PURPOSE in the perfect position, one off the fence, trailing the favourite who was unable to cross to the fence after On Appro kicked up half a length, stopping Simply Believing to cross to the fence.
Todd simply bided his time having
TASK AND PURPOSE in a sweet rhythm throughout. Approaching the top of the straight,
TASK AND PURPOSE was peeled out off the heels of Simply Believing who was yielding under pressure. At the 350m
TASK AND PURPOSE was left in front as the leaders dropped off, so Todd had to push the go button earlier than he wanted. The mare was full of running establishing a two-length lead. She started to tire at the 100m mark, then the swoopers started to make ground. However, the break she had established and the vigour of the ride of Todd kept her going to record a valuable win.
Matt has only had
TASK AND PURPOSE for 4 race starts after we sent the mare down to him, believing she would thrive in his rural environment and having access to the beach to keep her mentally fresh.
In these 4 starts, this is her
second WIN and she was unlucky not to have had 3 wins when an eye-catching first up run from back in the field and stuck wide, saw her just miss out on reeling in the leaders. She then won at Hamilton over 1400m, before we stepped her up to 1500m which we have learned is too far.
A Benchmark 66 rated mare before the most recent start,
Adam Watt found in the racing calendar a Benchmark 68 1300m event for mares at Morphettville.
A city win was the main thing missing on a lovely pedigree page for
TASK AND PURPOSE so a plan was devised to take her across to Adelaide to attack this event and the resulting win was extremely valuable.
TASK AND PURPOSE in a 20-start career prior to this win, had won 3 races at 1400m: Newcastle, Hamilton and Goulburn and she had been placed 5 times in the city.
What she needed to do was pad out her pedigree page with that elusive Metropolitan Saturday Win.
She has now achieved that, taking her resume to 21 starts: 4 Wins: 2 seconds, 3 thirds and $122,180.
TASK AND PURPOSE is a 4yo mare by ZOUSTAR x COMBAT KITTY. She was a
$550,000 yearling at the Magic Millions originally trained by Chris Waller. He couldn’t get her to go, and the then 3yo filly broke through for her maiden win at Newcastle just a week before being sold through the Magic Millions broodmare sale, exactly this time last year.
Dynamic Syndications / Dean Watt Bloodstock (FBAA) purchased her for $100,000 believing she had plenty of upside still in her. If we could do as anticipated and win a city race with her and in the process build her residual value, she was a terrific opportunity for our owners.
Since we purchased
TASK AND PURPOSE, she has raced 8 times for our owners. She has won 3 races and run 3 x 4th and a 5th and banked over $56,000 prizemoney. The only time she missed out was when trained in Sydney we raced her over 1500m at Kembla and she dropped out so we spelled her and then sent her to Matt Laurie.
She is sound and racing well under Matt and we are expecting her capable to add further wins to her record before retiring.
She is now a beautiful prospect as a broodmare for all commercial breeders.
