CONSTANZIA our 4yo Brown Mare by PIERRO x MAFIA MISS faced the starter for her fourth career start and came away victorious in the BJ’s Workwear Maiden Handicap 1280m at Muswellbrook on Melbourne Cup day Tuesday 5/11.
Her record now reads 4 sts: 1-0-1 and twice fifth.
Owners like winners at anytime but there is something more special when you can win on Melbourne Cup Day.
Whilst we all have dreams of winning at Flemington on Cup Day, if the horse isn’t at that level for a specific race on Cup Day, there is a plethora of races Australia wide in which to compete.
It’s the one day of the year all racing enthusiasts turn their attention to raceday in Melbourne and local racing.
So, it was a nice result for the patient and loyal Dynamic owners of CONSTANZIA when facing the starter for her fourth time but it was just her second race start for our Newcastle based trainer Jason Deamer, as CONSTANZIA went out $2.60 favourite and won.
However, it certainly wasn’t easy to record this win.
CONSTANZIA deserved favouritism based upon her first up run for Jason at Port Macquarie on the 12th October when 3rd of 10 over 1010m on a Heavy Track.
Here at Muswellbrook CONSTANZIA was ridden by Greg Ryan.
From Barrier 5 in a field of 11 speed maps had the filly sitting handy one pair back. However, races sometimes don’t turn our as anticipated and, in this event, each of the 4 horses drawn underneath CONSTANZIA pushed up, which caught our mare 4 deep over the first 400m.
At the 900m, the leaders paired off and with our mare one pair back she was still trapped 3 deep.
Greg Ryan realising he was caught with nowhere to hide, elected to do the wise decision and stroll up to join the leading pair despite still 3 deep.
As the field swung into the straight, Greg pushed the go button and CONSTANZIA worked her way to the lead but only a narrow one, over eventual runner-up Jay’n’jay who had enjoyed a softer run leading on the fence.
Whilst maintaining a lead all the way down the straight, the other horse refused to yield and the hard work CONSTANZIA had to endure throughout started to take its toll as our mare began to gas out.
However, a fighting will to win and a committed ride ensured our mare kept going to score a determined and well-deserved victory.
