Promising Middle-Distance prospect SAVVY CROWN (4yo g. Savabeel x Tiara), an Inglis Sales purchase from
Sledemere Stud (As Agent for Waikato Stud) faced the starter at Newcastle on Saturday 19/12 and scored a tough victory to record back-to-back wins and advanced his career record to
7 starts: 3 wins (1600m, 1850m, 2012m), when claiming the TOZER AIR Benchmark 64 Handicap over 1850m in a time of 1:55.57 (600m 35.47) on a Soft 5 surface.
Having won impressively by a soft 5 lengths at Hawkesbury over 1600m in Class 1 company at his previous start when second up after a spell, our
gun trainer Jason Deamer was confident that
SAVVY CROWN had improved off that run in fitness and we knew the 1850m would be far better option than the shorter course mile at his previous run, however this Benchmark 64 was chock full of better performed competitors than his previous effortless romp.
When the gates crashed back,
SAVVY CROWN under our go to pilot Christian Reith jumped away well from barrier 4.
SAVVY CROWN ($4.20) pushed forward and after the field had run the first 150m, Christian Reith had angled across to find the perfect one out -one back spot, as Microna ($31) and Deadly Impact ($4.60) pushed forward to lead. Christian by claiming the one -one spot had trapped the favourite Divine Eleven ($3.50 fav) three deep without cover. This was a masterful ride to this point, as he had controlled the favourite, keeping it deep and he was on the back of Deadly Impact that looked the other danger on paper.
As the field swung into the back straight passing the 1600m, the field settled down into its pattern as the tempo slowed, peeling off 12.24 from the 1600m to 1400m and then a slower 12.74 from the 1400m to the 1200m and slower again 12.86 from the 1200m to the 1000m and then, 12.70 from the 1000m to the 800m.
The tempo began to increase from the 700m and the sectional split from the 800m to 600m had quickened up to 12.13.
This is where approaching the point of the home turn, the field began to bunch, which caused us a fair bit on angst because the Deadly Impact began to tire and yield as the field started to swoop out wider, causing Christian to have to check and be held up for a run at a vital time.
As the field straightened for the run home, the tempo had quickened significantly, as they peeled off from the 600m to 400m an 11.83 sectional split.
At the 400m,
SAVVY CROWN was shuffled back, whilst the leader Microna had hit the go button and dashed 3 lengths in front of Deadly Impact which was still yielding into our face and Divine Eleven had swept past that runner with clean air in front of him, to give chase to the leader.
Christian was trapped behind the weakening Deadly Impact with another no hope chance on his outside Salamangker ($21) which was also weakening out.
It took
SAVVY CROWN until the 350m when Christian saw a small window and pushed out to bump Salamangker out of the way but by then it looked as if the bird had flown because now
SAVVY CROWN was 5 lengths off the leaders, well back in 6th spot and was without momentum, whilst those in front were all out sprinting.
The field had run an 11.90 sectional from the 400m to the 200m but it wasn’t until they passed the 300m that
SAVVY CROWN got clear because he had become unbalanced by the bump with Salamangker and had begun to lay-in, so Christian had to grab hold again and angled off the heels of those in front, to set sail and chase the leaders from the centre of the track.
It was only as they passed the 200m mark and being back in fifth spot and 5 lengths away did
SAVVY CROWN commence a serious chase. Over the next 100m
SAVVY CROWN had picked up and run past his first of 3 peers ahead of him but was still 2.5 lengths away from the leader Microna.
It was here that his superior staying genetics, class and fitness kicked-in and with every stride, he started to wind-in the leader.
At the 50m, with hard riding, Christian and
SAVVY CROWN were now three-quarters of a length away with just 10 strides remaining to the finishing line however our
Dynamic Duo were sizzling home.
By 25m to run
SAVVY CROWN had claimed Microna and went on bye, to record a widening 0.46 length win over Microna with 1.9 lengths back to Into The Oblivion in third place.
Having blown his opposition apart at Hawkesbury the start prior, this win against better opposition in higher grade was a far more encouraging result because he had to overcome significant disadvantage and give away a big head start and only could give a serious challenge from the 250m but did so with the class of an encouraging middle-distance prospect.
Still new to the racing caper and learning all the time since this was just his 7th start and still well short of the distances he was bred to be best suited, to overcome such adversity and still win is exciting for his owners.
Credit to
Christian Reith who didn’t panic when things went pear shaped in the run and special mention to
Jason Deamer who keeps producing our Dynamic Horses to the track in excellent condition and ready to run to the best of their ability everytime.
