High Chaparral has continued his barnstorming form in recent weeks, adding two new Stakes Winners to his resume.
Following his fifth in the Group 1 ATC Australian Derby, improving stayer HIPPOPUS (3c High Chaparral x Straight Eight, by Danske) scored a resounding win in the Listed VRC St Leger at Flemington on Anzac Day.
The Waterhouse trained three year-old was partnered by Craig Williams and sent out favourite for the 2800 metre staying test and emerged triumphant after powering clear to win by three lengths.
“Once he got through he really showed his class, said Williams.
“I was really impressed with the feel he gave me today. He’s very much a horse on the up.”
Whilst in the Northern Hemisphere over the weekend, the in-form sire claimed more black-type glory in Germany when Palomita (5m High Chaparral x Permia, by Kornado) took out the Listed Grosser Preis von Rossman. The German trained mare had performed admirably in black-type company on previous occasions, prior to breaking through for her first Stakes Class win.
High Chaparral looks set to have a big couple of weeks in the Northern Hemisphere and will be represented by his Toronado in the Gr1 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket on Saturday. Toronado has been racing in great form and is bound to start at the top of the markets.
With 42 Stakes Winners to his credit there are 26 Colts and Geldings and16 Fillies: 8 are at Group 1 Level, 4 x Group 2, 12 x Group 3 and 18 x Listed.
