On Sunday, SYDNEY FC's impeccable commencement to the 2016/17 Hyundai A-League season continued when they trounced a hapless Perth Glory side 4-1 in a tough, bruising and electrifying victory at Sydney’s Allianz Stadium.
Sydney FC’s win extended their lead at the top Hyundai A-League, undefeated after 6 rounds of a 27 round competition and in the process, set a club record equalling ten consecutive wins across all competitions.
In hot and blustery conditions, Glory started at a higher tempo which offered up several early chances in the opening minutes.
However it was the
Sky Blues midfielder Milos Ninkovic who controlled the match for the next 80 plus minutes.
In an
immaculate Man of the Match performance, he opened the scoring with a combination of pressure, skill and grace to bamboozle the Perth defence.
He was back at it again just before half-time when he set up Sydney FC Marque player Bobo which pushed the advantage to a 2-0 half-time lead.
Midway through the second stanza, Perth resurrected the game into the contest when a ball from just inside the penalty box took a wicked deflection off Sydney FC defender Rhyan Grant causing the ball to deviate and spin away from Sydney’s brilliant keeper Danny Vukovic.
Whilst Sydney were always dominant and in control, it was again Milos Ninkovic who eased Sky Blue supporters nerves. He scored again with 15 minutes to go, before skipper Alex Brosque drove the nail in with an appropriate goal on what was Alex’s
150th A-League appearance for Sydney FC.
This result puts into the record books
coach Graham Arnold’s sixth win from six games to start the season which now has the Sky Blues not only undefeated at the Top of the Hyundai A-League Ladder with 18 points but also, they’re a dominating six points clear of their closest peers Melbourne City (12 points). This is after 6 matches which is almost a quarter of the way through the season.
The Sky Blues so far in 2016/17 have proved to be the A-League “entertainers” scoring 17 goals whilst conceding only two. This has them at plus 15 goals, 10 goals clear of their closest peer Melbourne Victory (5) and Melbourne City (4). Only these 3three teams have a positive goal differential.
Next Saturday night is shaping up as a monumental clash for Sydney FC who are taking on the current 3rd placed Brisbane Roar who boast an impressive record at home.
However a win by the Sky Blues would see the Sydney FC equal the best ever start to a Hyundai A-League season by any team in the history of the A-League with seven consecutive wins.
What They Said
Coach Graham Arnold: “I’m looking forward to the day of a 90 minute performance. I thought we were fantastic tonight for 60 to 65 minutes.
“You’re never going to control the game for the full 90 but our slow starts is something we need to look at.
“It was a fantastic performance, we gave the fans their money’s worth. I don’t think they had a shot on target, we could have had more. I think we’re physically by far the strongest team in the league. We’ve got a great team spirit, the group is exceptionally happy.
“We just want to win every game and you can see the boys want to do the same. They’re a hard side to play against, Perth are a difficult side and have some very good individual quality.”
Captain Alex Brosque said: “The A-League is that tough, anyone can beat anyone on their day and I think that makes it even more special what we’ve done with the six wins in a row and reaching the FFA Cup final. I’ve never seen a team at Sydney start this way, play this way or dominate games this way. There is a long way to go, we’re not getting carried away.”
