With the 2012-13 season winding down, a quick review of some of the Group 1 winners of the current season made some interesting reading.
Champion Trainer
CHRIS WALLER was the leading Trainer producing 9 Group 1 wins across 8 individual winners. Interestingly it would not surprise too many readers that 8 of his 9 Group 1 wins were at 1600m and beyond.
Of the
69 Group 1 races conducted in Australia in 2012-13,
24 of these races were run at 2000m and beyond (38.4%).
Of these
24 Group 1 races at these distances of 2000m and further, a massive
11 races (45.8%) are restricted to 3yo’s.
A further
5 individual Group 1 races for 3yo’s are conducted at 1600m, for those that are bred to run a trip.
Therefore at 1600m + restricted to 3yo’s there are 16 Group 1 events.
However in comparison, for the 3yo sprinters from 1,000m to 1400m, there are only
2 Group 1 races for them to compete, The Coolmore Stud Stakes at 1200m and the Golden Rose at 1400m.
However a review of the pedigrees across all auction catalogues conducted in Australia has revealed that approximately
85% of the horse population is bred to run up to 1600m whilst just
15% is bred to run beyond a mile. This is a trend created by breeders reacting to commercial supply and demand market forces.
The theoretical position shows that
14,296 live foals born in 2012 therefore with approximately
85% of the population bred to sprint, that represents
12,151 yearlings whilst
2,141 are bred to stick on as the distances increase.
With the influx of big money European Stayers, these horses between them still have only
13 Group 1 races per season in which to contest. That’s just
18.8% of the Group 1 events. Interestingly 8 of the 13 races were won by imports whist 5 were won by Australasian bred horses.
It’s a simple enough equation why to invest in horses bred to run 1600m and further, smaller numbers of competitors and a larger pool of elite races and big prizemoney.

That’s why Dynamic Syndications have purchased many more horses bred to run a trip. It’s about giving our owners the opportunity to greater racetrack success. The above statistics support our investment strategy.
We invite you to join us and the might of the Chris Waller stables as we target these races. With well bred fillies that maintain strong residual values.
