The Day 2 market was stronger than Day 1 with the average increasing to $127,977 and the Median remaining on its first Day high of $100,000. However the more things change the more they stay the same. Welcome to the Magic Millions Sales of 2012.
Having a swing and a miss on 6 occasions during the first day we went into bat again during Day 2 on 15 occasions. With a full swing we struck out another 13 times but did manage to grab two yearlings we thought were just sensational. We purchased our first yearling early on the second morning and our next buy was not until late into the evening.
Our First Purchase
Lot 196 a Bay colt by Champion Sire ENCOSTA DE LAGO from the Danehill mare PETTA GAYE.
An Outstanding Individual ENCOSTA DE LAGO / PETTA GAYE colt from COOLMORE STUD
Foaled nice and early on the 29th August this colt was the classical type of thoroughbred Dynamic Syndications purchases. We have always stated that we have no intention to chase the market and the horse would have to present itself at a fair and equitable market price with outstanding genetic balance and passing a stringent veterinary examination and be clean on X-ray.
The colt we purchased is an A+++ Rating Score.
He is a Full Brother to 5 foals to race 3 winners and 2 placed. CHULA VISTA , CHAMPAGNE DAYS, IT'S WINE O'CLOCK, Cheerine Sun, Wittenoom Way.
His Dam PETTA GAYE is the 1/2 sister to Champion mare HORLICKS 17 wins (5 Gr1 wins). She is the dam of Champion Stayer BREW (Melbourne Cup) and SW BUBBLE. Also the dams of SW SOLO FLYER Gr2 , FIUMICINO Dual Gr1 winner and MY TUSKER Gr2.
The value of the family is in it's sale history. The breeder has only sent the mare to ENCOSTA DE LAGO. It has been a sensational result for the breeder over the years.
PETTA GAYE'S first foal (2006) sold for $250,000. Her second foal sold in 2007 for $500,000. Her third foal sold for $350,000 in 2008, her fourth foal sold in 2009 for $340,000 whilst her fifth foal was passed in for $250,000 in 2010. She did not have a foal offered in 2011.
The mare's previous foals, all were Encosta De Lago yearlings, have earned a massive $1,690,000 for an average of $360,000.
CHAMPION SIRE - ENCOSTA DE LAGO needs no introduction. Standing at a Service Fee in 2012 of $110,000 and with a yearling average in 2011 of $221,000, ENCOSTA DE LAGO is the sire of 74 Stakes Winners and 85 Stakes Placed individuals. He is the sire of 692 individual winners, 148 placed and another 67 have earned prize money = 87% Runners : Earners. He is the sire of SW including RACING TO WIN, ALINGHI, SACRED KINGDOM, MNEMOSYNE, DELAGO BROM, NORTHERN METEOR, MANHATTAN RAIN, ROAD TO ROCK, TITANIC JACK, ALOHA, NEWPORT, etc.
Our colt was a steal at $125,000 + GST = $137,500.
Offered by Coolmore Stud (as Agent) the colt was a strong individual with faultless conformation.
Our veterinarian Dr Tim Roberts summed things up for me in easy to understand terms. "He's a cracker Watto and if you don't want him I will buy him, if you don't want him just let me know".

A picture says a thousand words. This is the perfect example of the saying as this colt is as good as it gets.
Our Second Purchase
In the closing stage of Day 2 we struck again to buy lot 349 a stunning bay colt who we dream will turn out as good and be as popular as Apache Cat!
Last year we purchased a stunning looking colt with a big baldy face, a blue eye and flashy white markings. We could not believe our eyes when a story about the 2012 MM sale appeared on the industry leading website www.breednet.com.au by Tara Magwick which revealed that Vinery Stud had a colt on offer who was the clone of APACHE CAT.
He too has a big baldy face, white markings from head to toe and is a stunning looking horse with a baby blue pigment in his near side eye. What a stunner!
We paid $65,000 + GST = $71,500 for him in the sale ring.
I have been in the industry 30 years and have only seen a couple of thoroughbreds with such extravagant markings. Apache Cat was a cult hero and this boy is his splitting image. He has a terrific pedigree as well !
By proven sire NOT A SINGLE DOUBT, industry participants know he can get a fast 2yo being the sire of the 2011 MAGIC MILLIONS Winner KARUTA QUEEN as well as the speedy DOUBTFUL JACK, SQUAMOSA, SINGLE SPICE, CASTLETHORPE, ALWAYS CERTAIN, etc. Standing at a Service Fee of $24,750 in 2012, he averaged $74,000 at the 2011 yearling sales while his figures were higher still averaging $82,000 at the 2011 MM sale.
He is doing a sensational job as a stallion.
From just 4 crops of racing age, he has produced 168 runners, 100 Winners, 33 Placed, 13 Additional Money Earners. This gives the stallion a very high 86% Runners : Earners.
Our colt is from the Stakes Winning mare SUTTON REVIEW (by Youthful Legs). She won 4 races, 2 at 2, from 1200m to 1600m, including Gainsborough Stakes LR., AJC Convention Centre Hcp. Her dam Miss Regal Mine produced 6 foals to race 6 winners. She is also a 3/4 sister to the dam of Multiple SW ZOREGAL (19 wins to 1500m). Sitting prominently on the pedigree page is STRAIGHT STRIKE who was a Champion Sire and had a huge influence on the racing industry in the southern hemisphere.
We are considering making this handsome and flashy colt our "Girls Only Syndicate" and have a crack at Gerry Harvey's incredible $500,000 bonus money attached to the 2013 Magic Millions race.
Our colt as a foal at Vinery Stud was always a stunner !
Simply MM will add $500,000 to the prize money and distribute that between the horses in the race that are owned just by the girls !
Stay tuned for more information to be announced shortly.
Don't delay if you want a share in this stunning young man as he won't last long.

We look forward to competing with the market on Day 3 and attempt to add some other quality yearlings to our portfolio however we won't chase the market.
