On Saturday, the Multiple times Champion Australian Sire and the “Best Australian Bred Sire – Ever”
ENCOSTA DE LAGO took his tally to 21 Group 1 Winners and 97 Stakes Winners overall.
ENCOSTA DE LAGO has had a huge start to the new racing season. Already with 60 individual winners including 4 individual Stakes Winners:
COSTA VIVA, OUR SMOKIN’ JOEY, RIVA DE LAGO and
MISS ROSE DE LAGO and also 17 Stakes Placed horses.
Encosta De Lago fillies shone on Saturday.
Costa Viva (3f Encosta de Lago x Vivacious Spirit, by Bel Esprit) took the
Gr1 NZ Thousand Guineas in New Zealand and
Miss Rose de Lago (3f Encosta de Lago x Crimson Dawn, by Fasliyev) landed the
Gr3 WATC Champion Fillies Stakes at Ascot in Perth.
First up was 3yo filly COSTA VIVA :
The Gr1 NZ Thousand Guineas on Saturday at Riccarton went to the Aussie bred three year-old filly Costa Viva (3f Encosta de Lago x Vivacious Spirit, by Bel Esprit). Allowed to settle back in the field, Costa Viva came with a late rush to power home and win the 1600 metre feature by three parts of a length.
There was a strong early tempo and race favourite Bounding was three deep whilst Costa Viva ended up in a sweet spot and it set her up for the last shot and she executed it perfectly.
This win was no surprise. Costa Viva was an easy winner on debut at the end of August, then chased Bounding home in the Gr3 Hawkes Bay Breeders Stakes before last start winning at Listed level. Even though this was now stepping into a Gr1 event and therefore a tougher assignment, it made little difference and the filly now has the impressive record of three wins and a second from just four starts.
She’s a terrific filly in the making and the logical focus is the Filly of the Year series so it will be interesting to see how she performs as connections follow that path with her.
A $100,000 Magic Millions National Sale, Costa Viva was bred by Tarcoola Stud and is the first foal of Gr3 winning Bel Esprit mare Vivacious Spirit, a three-quarter sister-in-blood to stakes-winner Audacious Spirit.
Costa Viva became the 21st Group 1 winner for champion sire Encosta de Lago.
Then just a few hours later,
another Encosta De Lago filly hit the headlines. This time it was in WA where
Miss Rose de Lago won the WATC Champion Fillies Stakes at Ascot.
Miss Rose de Lago led throughout to win the 1600 metre contest by a length, as a short priced favourite and has now won three of five with prizemoney in excess of $220,000.
A $210,000 Magic Millions purchase from Coolmore, Miss Rose de Lago is the best of three winners from Crimson Dawn (GB), a Fasliyev daughter of Gr1 winner Mail the Desert.
Encosta De Lago is now the sire of 97 stakes-winners, 21 of them Gr1 winners.
Encosta de Lago has had a wonderful start to the season and is fast closing in on his century of stakes-winners. He stands at Coolmore Stud this season as the Best Value Sire on the Coolmore Stud roster at $55,000.
Encosta De Lago is achieving everything a great sire should. Precocious 2yo’s, Classic winners, Gr.1 sprinters, leading older horses, sale toppers – he’s got them all, colts and fillies.
