A brilliant last 600m from
3yo Colt ASTORIA allowed him to come from last, to claim an impressive win in the
NJC Springtime Stakes Gr3 1600m for 3yos and the value of Astoria as a future stallion increased dramatically.
The Godolphin runner jumped well from barrier seven but drifted back, with jockey Tye Angland restraining the son of Medaglia D’Oro ex Segue.
Angland showed plenty of patience, moving the bay youngster into the clear approaching the 300m mark before storming down the outside to defeat odds-on favourite Merovee by just under a length. A shot at Group One grade awaits Astoria after the Godolphin colt upset Merovee. Angland said he had anticipated he opted to stalk Merovee who had no answer for the winner’s finishing surge.
Astoria wins the 3yo Springtime Stakes
“He’s doing everything right and he won that well” Angland said.
“He has more improvement to give.”
Godolphin assistant trainer Nacim Dilmi confirmed Astoria would now be aimed towards next month’s Spring Champion Stakes where he expects the colt to relish a distance rise to 2000 metres.
“He is the type of horse who will go to 2000 and 2400 metres so to do that second-up over a mile today was very impressive,” Dilmi said.
“The Spring Champion Stakes is probably on the cards now.”
Astoria became the 106th individual Stakes Winner for Darley Stud’s Medaglia d’Oro and his 14th individual Stakes Winner in Australia, joining fellow sons VANCOUVER, ASTERN, etc.
The Colt is raced by Godolphin.
On the same day, another of the stallion’s progeny named
SPECTROSCOPE finished third in the
NJC Cameron Hcp Gr3 1500m.
It's been a massive week for the Super Sire who has also seen his Northern Hemisphere progeny set records at the Keeneland Yearling Sales and he is entrenched in the top 3 bracket of sires in the USA alongside Tapit and War Front.
His 28 Yearlings have averaged over $419,000 USD ($520,000 AUD).
There are only a few elite USA sires who enjoy actual ongoing success as a sire in Australia.
Medaglia d'Oro
Darley Stud’s “Super Sire” Medaglia d'Oro, now has 645 Winners; 106 Stakes Winners; 60 Stakes Placegetters and most importantly, he has sired 19 Individual Group 1 Winners.
That’s a brilliantly high 25.9% Black Type Earners : Winners Worldwide ratio.
So in simple terms, if you own a Medaglia d’Oro horse that wins a race – it has a one in four chance of going on to be a Stakes Class horse.
His yearlings in 2017 sold for up to $2.4 million in Australia highlighting the keen commercial demand for his progeny.
