Last Saturday,
Hall Of Fame – Champion Trainer GAI WATERHOUSE saddled up several excellent chances in major races at Rosehill and Flemington.
Unfortunately it was one of those day’s where she didn’t win a race but her horses were very competitive and through plain racing bad luck - she just missed out.
That’s the way our sport goes and why
there is no such thing as a certainty.
As they say ….
“It’s character building.”
Dynamic Syndications are the Primary Syndicator for Gai Waterhouse Racing and it’s proven to be a wonderful working relationship.
Whilst the racetrack success is awesome, it’s more about the
quality of GAI herself that makes the racing experience so enjoyable.
Yesterday GAI published on her blog a story titled
“NEVER BITTER” which we believe sums up the
LADY TRAINER perfectly.
I wish to share this story with our owners and friends to give an insight in to the
bubbly personality that is GAI and why we are
delighted to be working so closely together.
The glass is always 1/2 full with GAI !
NEVER BITTER - by GAI 14/9/15
I have learnt, over many years that being angry, bitter or upset after a narrow defeat is no good to anyone.
I win my share and when things don’t quite go to plan, the best thing to do is to move forward and not look back with regret.
Accidents occur when you look back and not forward.
Could I have done this with this horse as to find a length? Or that with another horse? It does not matter. After the race is run and won, they don’t let you re-evaluate then run the race again.
Saturday was full of great second placings with plenty to take out of the day moving forward.
Speak Fondly (Northern Meteor x Blab) is the class filly of Sydney. She certainly did herself and everyone proud in the Golden Rose Stakes, a race that barely has ever had a filly figure in the placings.
Next start in the Tea Rose over 1500m, this magnificently tenacious daughter of Northern Meteor will be very hard to beat.
Her next target is at Group 1 level in the Flight Stakes over 1600m on the 3rd October. The filly has come through the run in fantastic fashion, and she showed that 1400m and even beyond will be no issue.
If she can beat all but one of the colts over 1400m, she will be able to beat all the fillies over 1500m and the mile.
Back on top of the ground, Echo Gal (Stratum x Pink Siris) ran her heart out. She dashed to a good lead early in the straight and it took a fan favourite grey mare to get past her.
I was wrapped with the run, especially after the disappointing effort on the wet track at Wyong. This mare is back on track and another win, most likely at Group level, is not far away. She is going as well as ever and she certainly takes some catching as we saw on Saturday.
Cosmic Endeavour
Down in Melbourne it was an absolute pleasure to be able to use Bart’s famous Let’s Elope colours on my great mare Cosmic Endeavour (Northern Meteor x Crevette). And like Let’s Elope did so many times at Flemington, Cosmic Endeavour ran a brilliant race.
She was beaten just half a length in a real blanket finish after carrying top weight. On another day the daughter of Northern Meteor may have poked her head out, but unfortunately she just missed out this time.
Back at set weights in the Myer over 1600m you are going to see her best on Derby Day.
Speaking of Derby Day… didn’t Raphael's Cat (Redoute's Choice x Cat By The Tale) produce a brilliant Coolmore Stud Stakes trial on Saturday in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes.
I have always felt that this colt is a speed horse. He may develop into a miler with more experience, but at the minute he is a real get out and run colt, and these types of horses are very valuable in the spring. I have won good races up the Flemington straight in the past with the likes of Northern Meteor and Dance Hero, and I feel this colt has the sustained speed and tenacity required to really make it at the top level. He has a big spring down south ahead.
The best thing about racing is that it never ends.
Although a break is great every now and then, I always know that the next challenge will be upon me as soon as I take my next step or inhale my next breath.
The spring is only a week old and already I have a stack of promising types and the stars certainly look to be aligning.
In between race meetings I am inspecting yearlings and the process goes on and on. It is the best time of year and don’t you worry dear readers, the Lady Trainer will be back on her bike ready to fire at the next meeting and the one after that and the one after that.
See you there. Gai xx
