Once in a while this sport produces a pleasant result. This was the case on Tuesday afternoon when the Dynamic Syndications galloper KING BING won race 8 at Port Macquarie. It may have only been a lowly Class 1 country race but for the owners of KING BING, the win was very sweet.
KING BING (by Beautiful Crown / Cherry Orchard) is a horse with a terrific name to be at his best at this time of year ! It’s Cherry Season and the BING variety of cherry is the sweetest and most popular variety. It’s known as the King of Cherries ! Add the fact that a King wears a crown – from a mare named Cherry Orchard, the horse was very cleverly named by one of our team of owners.
KING BING won the Port Macquarie Panthers Class 1 over 1506m, running 1:30.30 which took a staggering 1.06 secs off the Class Record. The event was an apprentice only race and KING BING was ridden very well by the promising young lady rider Courtney Van Der Werf.
Starting as 3rd favourite, KING BING had been demanding a dry track and a 1500m and further race trip. He got both in this event and put his opposition away in commanding fashion.
Jumping evenly in a capacity field of 12 runners, the tempo was willing upfront and this allowed Courtney to steer KING BING over from an awkward barrier to sit in behind a hot speed, mid-field on the fence. Courtney was some 6 lengths off the leaders mid race and she sat patiently as the field approached the home turn. As those in front of her started to pack up and head wide around the tight home bend, KING BING stuck to the rail and turned for home, balanced and saving ground. Then at the top of the straight, a gap appeared along the rail and KING BING simply strolled through to hit the lead at the 250m. Then young Courtney made sure of the result by pushing the button and away the Dynamic runner went. He gapped his opponents to go on and score by 2.8 lengths x 2 lengths starting at the luxury price of $5.00 and paying $7.00 on the tote.
This horse has been a bit of an enigma throughout his 17 start career. He has the average figures of 2 wins, 2 seconds, 2 thirds. Its not outside the industry average stats of a good horse winning 1 race per 7 starts and another win in the near future will have him right on industry average. However he is a horse that has always shown a lot of training track ability but has been frustrating on raceday. He has displayed a genuine dislike to rain affected ground, which he has encountered on 6 occasions. Importantly he is a horse bred on a cross that wants 1600m however his race manners have been his downfall. He is a very impatient horse in running and locks his jaw and wants to over race. We have always been confident that he has the ability and simply, when the cards fall in the right manner, he can look a star. That’s what happened here. He jumped and was beaten for early speed, so he was able to follow, instead of wanting to over race. Then he got a dream passage and never went around a horse. Having said that, he still had an easy time and smashed the Class Record so there was huge merit in the effort.
If he was able to settle and be more patient in his races, he has untapped ability but his over racing has meant he could not get the distances in the past. He was fourth up in this event and fitter for his first three runs this prep. He should have won first up this preparation however just missed out after getting too far out of his ground. His second up run was more than fair without getting overly excited but then at his next start he should have been up to the 1500m – 1600m trip but a lack of suitable races at the time forced the horse to go back to a 1200m where he found it too sharp. However back up to the 1506m he was a different horse. Hopefully for the Dynamic Team of Owners that have been so patient with him, the horse is ready to repay their loyalty.
The horse was becoming frustrating and the owners were suggesting that the KING BING be sold in the next Inglis Tried Horse Sale on December 7. He will be aimed at a race on December 3 with a view of what the ownership group decides to do (either sell or keep racing), to be decided after that run.
Congratulations to the Dynamic Team that race KING BING.
