Arrowfield Stud took the honours as
Australia's leading breeder of Group 1 winners with four (4) in the 2014/15 season.
SNITZEL - at Stud
The Snitzel trio Sweet Idea, Wandjina and Hot Snitzel won a total of six Australian Group races last season headed by their Gr1 victories in the ATC Galaxy, VRC Australian Guineas and the BTC Cup.
Champion South African filly Majmu (Redoute's Choice x Spontaneous by Hussonet) is bred on the same cross as our new season 2yo with
Gai Waterhouse named
PUB GRUB.
She progressed from her unbeaten 2YO season to claim two Gr1 victories in the Gr1 Kenilworth Cape Fillies Guineas and Gr1 Turffontein Empress Club Stakes for owner Sheikh Hamdan and trainer Mike de Kock.
She also made up a Gr1 quinella for Redoute's Choice in the Turffontein President's Champions Challenge won by Wylie Hall.
Arrowfield’s four Gr1 winners last season took the stud’s number of
Gr1-winning graduates to 54 including 40 being Arrowfield-bred over the stud’s 30 years of operations.
SWEET IDEA
Sweet Idea (Snitzel x Flidais by Timber Country) and Hot Snitzel (Snitzel x Flames of Paris by Blushing Groom) were bred and sold by Arrowfield and Japan’s Katsumi Yoshida, a partnership also responsible for 2008 Horse of the Year Weekend Hussler and 2008 Blue Diamond winner Reaan.
The
Gai Waterhouse-trained Sweet Idea was retired after her Galaxy win which capped a stellar
$2.4 million career of eight wins (five in Group company) and eight placings (four in G1 races) from 19 starts.
Sweet Idea's co-owner Nick Vass paid $1.6 million to buy out his partners at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale in May. That completed a $4 million return on the $240,000 that Gai Waterhouse paid for her at the same venue three years ago.
WANDJINA
Wandjina (Snitzel x La Bamba by Last Tycoon) also trained by Gai Waterhouse was a $1 million yearling at the 2013 Inglis Easter Sale purchased for Edmund & Belinda Bateman.
The colt more than fulfilled expectations with his all-the-way Gr1 Australian Guineas win and two Gr1 placings that included a close second, splitting Dissident and Chautauqua in the Gr1 All Aged Stakes.
Wandjina signed off with a fine effort when a close up sixth in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Hot Snitzel proved that the Snitzel breed are tough, sound horses that can race on into later years when during the Brisbane Winter Carnival scored a surprise win in the BTC Cup at Doomben.
It was the 6yo gelding's sixth Group race success among the eight wins and eight placings that have returned $1.2 million. Trained by
Gerald Ryan for most of his career, Hot Snitzel win wasn’t without controversy as the horse was transferred just days prior to the Cup over to the Snowden’s stables who snatched the 10% trainer’s percentage and the headlines for all Gerald Ryan’s outstanding training efforts.
The Arrowfield quartet of Gr1 winners led an assortment of 16 individual Arrowfield-bred winners of 26 Group and Listed Races in 2014/15. Seven (7) were by Snitzel, three (3) by Redoute’s Choice, three (3) by Manhattan Rain, (2) by Hussonet and 1 by Beneteau.
All were offered for sale at auction and 15 of them sold for prices ranging from the $20,000 paid for the weanling Lady Jivago to the seven-figure colt Wandjina.
Their seven (7) Snitzel Stakes Winners won twelve (12) stakes races. They were: Sweet Idea, Wandjina, Hot Snitzel, Amorino, Odyssey Moon, Smoko and Ygritte.
Perth stakes winner Rock Magic was sold out of training after four wins with Paul Messara.
The Arrowfield list doesn't include champion sprinter
Lankan Rupee (Redoute's Choice), who won the Gr1 Manikato Stakes and Gr1 Lightning Stakes and
Miracles Of Life (Not A Single Doubt), the winner of the Gr1 Robert Sangster Stakes.
Both were both born and raised at Arrowfield for their long term client, Teeley Assets.
Whilst both the
Snitzel Listed Race winners, Bouzy Rouge and Modello are also omitted from Arrowfield’s results because they were both only offered for sale by Arrowfield as agent on behalf of their private breeders.
