The Team at
Dynamic Syndications and trainer Chris Waller were delighted with the way our promising
2yo filly BERGDORF (Manhattan Rain ex Miss Excellence) went about her work on a slow track at Rosehill in the first serious 2yo trial of the season in the metropolitan area.
BERGDORF
Whilst the filly was officially the runner-up in a tight finish to a David Payne trained colt named Bold Circle, it was the way that our filly
BERGDORF went about her work that was so impressive and has connections more than satisfied. The trial had 7 starters: 4 colts and 3 fillies. They ran an impressive 55.70 for 2yo’s. The average for the morning for the older horses was 55.34. So for the 2yo’s to run this time was outstanding. The margins were: 0.2 x 1.2.
1st BOLD CIRCLE 2yo Colt by Bernadini ex Courtyard Circle
2nd BERGDORF 2yo Filly by MANHATTAN RAIN ex MISS EXCELLENCE
3rd DOUBLE HAPPY 2yo Colt Testa Rossa ex Hurl
The two other fillies ran 4th Shawqeeny and 6th Murta Cape
Jumping away fast,
BERGDORF was clearly the leader in the first few strides however rider
Jimmy Cassidy was keen to educate rather than bustle our filly. He took hold of
BERGDORF and the filly came back underneath Jimmy nicely and the pair sat out 3 wide heading into the top turn. Jimmy explained that the horse inside him wanted to lug off the track so he asked
BERGDORF to come back under him and the pair eased a length, so not to be pushed wider. Despite being trapped out 3 deep down the side Jimmy reported he was happy with the filly travelling in good rhythm before rounding the home bend 3-4 deep.
Balancing up at the top of the rise the filly let down nicely with natural ability and was most impressive. Hitting the front with over 100m to run, Jimmy felt that the filly had done enough at that stage and sat up and took hold on her to coast to the post. The winner was chasing hard and being pushed out to catch
BERGDORF and got there under hard riding right on the line.
There is so much upside in
BERGDORF’S trial, especially when it comes to education and fitness. However there is little doubt that
BERGDORF will improve significantly upon this outing.
An impressive yearling offered by Queensland’s Windemere Stud, she was lot 77 at the Magic Millions. She was knocked down to
Dynamic Syndications for $90,000. An advantage was her foaling date of the 1st August, she was a mature looking filly at the sale but a little on the tubby side however she was well grown with good bone. A very athletic type, our veterinarian Dr. Tim Roberts gave us the green light to proceed after a review of the x-rays gave her the all clear.
Identified prior to the Magic Millions Sales as a must inspect candidate, the filly was from
MISS EXCELLENCE - a FULL Sister to our own Gr1 Blue Diamond winner
REWARD FOR EFFORT.
REWARD FOR EFFORT
As Miss Excellence is a FULL SISTER to Reward For Effort, then they are both ½ siblings to Bahia – The dam of
OVERREACH.
OVERREACH - Winning the Golden Slipper
Because OVERREACH is also by Exceed And Excel therefore that makes both of them ¾ relations to OVERREACH.
At the time of purchase OVERREACH had only been placed once 2nd in the MRC Debutant Stakes LR. History now shows she went on to be a dominant 2yo and won the Gr1 Golden Slipper.
Both REWARD FOR EFFORT and MISS EXCELLENCE along with fellow siblings: SW Consular and SP Annie La Vie as well as Bahia, are from the high quality multiple stakes winning mare
MISS PROSPECT a daughter of Golden Slipper Winner Rory’s Jester.
From a female family perspective, this filly was saturated in precocious speed.
MANHATTAN RAIN - Very Promising First Crop Sire
Then most importantly, she had been well mated to promising first crop sire
MANHATTAN RAIN. The son of Encosta De Lago ex Shantha’s Choice, is a ½ brother to Champion Stallion
REDOUTE’S CHOICE and SW
PLATINUM SCISSORS and SLIDING CUBE.
MANHATTAN RAIN - Winning the AJC Sires Produce Gr1
MANHATTAN RAIN was an outstanding 2yo in his own right, winning both the AJC Sires Produce and STC Skyline Stakes and ran 3rd in the Golden Slipper and Champagne Stakes. As an older horse he ran 2nd in the WS Cox Plate and 3rd in the Caulfield Guineas.
MANHATTAN RAIN being a son of
Encosta De Lago (as was last seasons Champion first crop sire Northern Meteor) offers that elusive precocious speed and older horse stamina that so many stallions don’t possess. They normally have one or the other, rarely both.
Importantly
Arrowfield Stud is an elite thoroughbred nursery and makes astute decisions regarding their stallion roster. We were confident that with the stallion being of an acceptable stature for Arrowfield to stand him at stud then Manhattan Rain would have a bright future ahead of him.
As followers of Dynamic Syndications are aware, we place enormous emphasis on the genetic balance of a pedigree and to the way the genetics performs in Australia.
BERGDORF was bred on the
ENCOSTA DE LAGO over DANEHILL line cross. At the time of the sale in January, the cross was proving very successful with 13 stakes winners already produced that way. Since then, another stakes winner being none other than current sensation
ZOUSTAR (also trained by Chris Waller) has been produced the same way. So with
14 Stakes Winners in total bred to this cross, its fair to say the cross is proven to be successful. Stakes Winners bred on this cross are:
ALOHA Gr1
DELAGO DELUXE Gr1
ZOUSTAR Gr1
DAN DE LAGO Gr2
LARGO LAD Gr2
MERLENE DE LAGO Gr2
ROCHA Gr2
DANAUPAIR STARLET Gr3
MASCHINO Gr3
NEEDS FURTHER Gr3
ONE LAST DANCE Gr3
PRECIOUS LORRAINEGr3
ADMIRATION LR
ASTOUNDED LR
There have been 201 starters bred on the cross for 129 winners (64%) and 14 Stakes Winners (7% Runners: Stakes Winners)
At the time we purchased the filly she had the pedigree rating of an
A+ 1,355% rating score under our classifications but more importantly, she had qualified into the elite BEST OF SALE category which identifies the
top 5% of the catalogue by various factors including matings.
SO - WHAT’S IN A NAME ? We have been asked how the name
BERGDORF was created.
Firstly, the sire is
MANHATTAN RAIN and MANHATTAN is in New York.
Secondly, the dam is
MISS EXCELLENCE. With Excellence referring to being elite and high quality and Miss obviously being female, the emphasis was on a high quality female influence from New York.
There is one standout in New York that caters for this. It’s the department store
BERGDORF GOODMANS. It is a high end, luxury label establishment only found in New York. It caters predominantly for women. It’s the centre of excellence for ladies. BERDORF GOODMANS is renowned around the world. However when people refer to the store, they traditionally drop the second name and say “I’ll meet you at
BERGDORF’S”. To this end, there was a recent film released in the USA named “Scatter my ashes at
BERGDORF’S” a story of high end society women in New York whom are in love with the store.
Hence the name simply had to be –
BERGDORF.
