It was no surprise to connections of
Dynamic Syndications runner
BLOWIN’ YOUR MIND that the
odds-on favourite for leading trainer
Chris Waller and leading jockey
Hugh Bowman would be hard to beat in a small field in the opening event at
Kembla Grange on Sunday 1st December.
However it was delightful to see our $1.60 favourite who was asked to lump 59.0kgs, treat his opposition with disrespect, as he powered away to record an ever widening 4.3 len x 2.8 len victory and giving both the placegetters 5.0 kgs in weight.
The
Chris Waller trained
BLOWIN’ YOUR MIND (Encosta De Lago x Brown Eyed Girl) took his resume to 1
3 starts = 3 wins, 4 seconds and over $90,000 in prizemoney thanks to a patient and classy ride by leading pilot
Hugh Bowman.
Only ever going to be a field of 6 after acceptances and then followed with a scratching,
BLOWIN’ YOUR MIND drew barrier 1 and was ridden masterfully by
Hugh Bowman.
Knowing we were the class runner in the race despite the massive spread in the weights, it was always the tactical decision to roll forward and take a sit and let the obvious leader on paper take up the running.
That's how it panned out.
BLOWIN’ YOUR MIND jumped well from the gates and was a neck clear on setting. Hugh pushed up on the fence to ensure the eventual leader Purple Emperor didn't cross too early and another runner Tamohara pushed forward 3 deep.
Hugh then took hold and in doing so, got a lovely trail on the back of the speed in 3rd position. Hugh allowed the horse to then come off the rail to be one off the fence with cover ensuring he could not get put into a pocket on the fence. As they approached the home turn
BLOWIN’ YOUR MIND was wanting to go harder and Hugh had a lap full of horse underneath him.
Easing out off the heels of the leaders 3 deep as they swung for home,
BLOWIN’ YOUR MIND pulled his way to the lead and worked a length in front with 300m to run.
Then Hugh let off the brakes and the horse bounded away under his own steam to run away and score by a big margin over the palacegetters. Such was the dominance of the final sections; they ran home in a slick 34.34 secs in an overall time of 1:37.25. In comparison, the next event was over a mile in a bigger field and they ran 1:38.03 coming home their last 600m in 35.87.
Always a horse that has shown with patience and maturity, he would be a handy miler to 2000m galloper,
BLOWIN’ YOUR MIND proved again that he has the class to be a competitive city standard galloper when the penny eventually dropped between his ears.
Coming into this event off a previous start unexplainable failure, the start prior to that was a terrific 2nd at Randwick. However at his most recent run prior to this win he seemed not to handle the tighter Canterbury layout under lights. We had nominated the horse for this event and an 1800m event at Randwick on the Friday and we had accepted in both.
However the obvious race was the Kembla event, as the bigger track would allow him time to balance and stretch out. If he ran up to expectations, it would also give the horse a much needed confidence builder after what happened previously. It has turned out perfectly.
In winning the
Summer Racing Hcp Class 2 1600m,
BLOWIN’ YOUR MIND picked up $12,250 for winning and a
$5,000 BOBS EXTRA bonus making the trip down the highway for $17,250 in total, a worthwhile day out as the prizemoney has now paid for his training fees this preparation and anything on top now is a bonus.
BLOWIN’ YOUR MIND became our
14th winner this 2013-14 racing season and our
358th winner overall.
