Everyone has a chance in the racing game and the feel good story of the weekend without doubt, goes to a top bloke in Warwick Farm based trainer
GARY NICKSON, who put the polish on
ALPHA MISS to win the
Gimcrack Stakes.
A $6,000 purchase at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale last year, Alpha Miss (by Lucky Owners) won Sydney’s first juvenile event for the new season, the Gimcrack Stakes (Listed, 1000m).
Showing strong determination to edge out favourite Tetsuko (by I Am Invincible) by a long head with Lucky Raquie (by Encosta De Lago) finishing two and a half lengths third, the Gary Nickson-trained filly was kept safe in the betting on the back of a smart Randwick trial victory in the quickest heat at the Official 2yo trials a fortnight earlier.
Gary Nickson - Trainer of Alpha Miss
“This is a huge day for the stable,” said Gary.
“These owners have had horses with me on and off for many years without much success. She is as tough as nails this filly and she won her trial with plenty of authority in fast time.”
“The owner that brought the weanling gave it to me as a yearling on a lease. When I broke her in, I thought it went pretty good so I rang all the loyal clients I’ve had for many years who haven’t had much luck and asked would they like to be involved.”
Stalking leader Tetsuko, Alpha Miss was able to wear down her rival over the final stages. The winning jockey described the filly as, “a professional filly, a dead-set two-year-old.”
Alpha Miss (2 f Lucky Owners - Soiree Girl by Rory’s Jester) is her sire’s fourth stakes winner. Also she is the fourth winner for her dam Soiree Girl. Alpha Miss’ second dam is Society Party (by Far North) who produced 11 winners from 12 foals to race including the stakes winners Party Boy (by Jeune) and Rory’s Classic (by Rory’s Jester).
GARY NICKSON
Gary Nickson is one of the nicest people in racing. Whilst he can easily be described as a battler within the thoroughbred industry, from only a few boxes at Warwick Farm he always has several nice horses in training.
Gary Nickson was Dynamic boss Dean Watt’s first racehorse trainer 32 years ago with a horse named Bernini. We are delighted for Gary that he won this Black Type event and we wish him at the team that race him, all the very best into the future. We hope this win will increase Gary’s profile and he attracts more owners / more horses to his stables. There is not a more loyal and trustworthy trainer in the business than Gary and he deserves his moment in the spotlight.
