“Chilla the Killa” lived up to the wraps placed upon him by his loyal ownership team and connections after another commanding win – this time on Monday at Quirindi.
CHILCOTIN - our 5 year old bay gelding by Medaglia d’Oro (USA) x Lake Charlotte (USA), won Race 1 the Liverpool Plains Class 3 Handicap over 1450m as 59.0kgs top weight, ridden by Josh Adams for Newcastle trainer Ben Smith.
Chilcotin winning Race 1 at Quirindi
CHILCOTIN Race Summary: 17 starts: 4:2:4 and Prizemoney: $78,050.
Purchased for only $17,000 as a Maiden tried horse from Godolphin, CHILCOTIN at the time of purchase had raced 4 times for just 1 third placing.
Chilcotin
Since Dynamic Syndications purchased him, we changed routines and then placed him to advantage.
He has started on 13 occasions: 4 wins, 2 seconds, 3 thirds and he’s earned for our team $73,900.
In race 1 on the programme, it was anticipated that Chilcotin would sit towards the rear and swing around them into the straight, getting home down the outside.
However that flew out the window when the gates flung back, Chilcotin bounced cleanly and to Josh Adams surprise, none of the expected speed went forward, which changed tactics immediately.
Plan B went into action. Knowing he was on the superior runner, Josh allowed Chilla to roll forward without any pressure, to sit at the girth of the leader for the first 300m, running along at not much more than a canter.
At the 900m another runner Raised To Duel whipped up 3 deep and that was perfect for us as Josh pulled Chilla back underneath him to get the trail behind the leading pair.
At the 650m Josh knew that the tempo was far too slow so made a move around the leading pair 3 deep at which point, the leader on the fence Prontissimo, yielded ground.
As they field swung for home at the 400m, Josh pushed the go button and Chilla moved up swiftly on Raised To Duel and then swept past to lead at the 250m. He had the field covered and had the race won unless something came out of the ruck to threaten, otherwise he had them beaten.

By the 200m mark he was an easy 3 lengths in front with nothing coming so Josh allowed Chilla to run home under hands and heels and then ease down over the final 50m, where he recorded a soft 1.63 lengths x 1.61 length win.

He simply was too good and had a bit of talent and class on his rivals. Back in class into this event, it was like “shelling peas.”
It was all about Chilcotin. They had been exceptionally generous, offering $2.30 early and he was backed into $1.90 before getting out to $2.00 which was still a luxury price for what turned out to be not much more than a training gallop.
Returning to scale
He was the pick of the yard with a lovely shiny black coat on him. He had no luck first up from a spell when trapped deep throughout but today, it was an obvious put in, take out event paper and he got the job done.
Josh Adams and Ben Smith debrief
Ben Smith interviewed post-race said “that was his race – it was pretty painless in the end, the only concern today was the lack of speed in the small field so it was good to see Josh got rolling on him, which meant he didn’t have to do too much in the straight, he had it won a pretty long way out.
“He seemed to handle it (the Quirindi track layout) ok and I really like the way he lengthened the last 100m.
“He’s a nice horse and I think we will just keep him fresh now, into these seven furlong (1400m) races and that will be his go.
“The key is to keep him fresh – he gets very cheeky at home when he’s fresh so I think when he starts playing up again, it will be time to nominate him for his next race.”
Pilot Josh Adams when interviewed said “He was too good, he was favourite for a reason.
“A small field was a little worrying for me but it had to be run to suit so I had to make sure it was.
“He was always going to beat them but I didn’t want it to be a sit and sprint. The early part was very slow, so I got to the six (600m) and got on my bike…..”
