HIGH CHAPARRAL of course, is the sire of last week’s scintillating
G1 Royal Ascot Queen Anne Stakes winner
TORONADO, the previous season’s
European Champion 3yo Miler.
High Chaparral - Champion Sire
Sent off a red-hot 4/5 favourite for his seasonal debut, the Richard Hannon-trained son of
High Chaparral was held up at the rear before unleashing a powerful turn of foot to beat dual G1 winner
Verrazano.
Toronado
“We’ll stick to a mile with him,” commented Hannon. “The
G1 Sussex Stakes is highly likely; there’s also the
G1 Marois and then later there’s the
G1 Queen Elizabeth II and the
G1 Breeders’ Cup.
“He is every bit as good as any horse we have ever had. Just look at him, the stature of the horse.
I was quoted saying that he looks like Superman. He does – almost superhuman – a hell of a horse. He is the real deal. He has shown a massive turn of foot.”
The trainer could be talking about
So You Think, the way he waxes lyrical about his horse !
Toronado wasn’t the only son of
High Chaparral to win at Royal Ascot.
While ‘Superman’ carried the colours of Al Shaqab’s Sheikh Joaan on Tuesday, the colours of prominent American owner George Bolton were also carried to victory on Friday by
High Chaparral’s son CONTRIBUTOR, winner of the
Listed Wolferton Handicap.
“This is George’s first horse in England and he has won at Royal Ascot,” said trainer Ed Dunlop. “We have always thought a lot of the horse and he was my best 3yo last season.” California-based Bolton added: “This is the highlight of my racing career – to go to Ascot and win a race. It’s very exciting.”
Back in Australia on Saturday,
KINGDOMS made a winning debut for his new trainer Brian Smith when flying home to win the Listed Open Mile over 1600m at Eagle Farm.
“He is really exciting,” said Smith. “He had a little setback, otherwise I would have run him in the
G1 Stradbroke, I think he is that smart!”
Kingdoms has as his major aim the
G1 Metropolitan in the Spring.
High Chaparral had also featured with a juvenile double last Saturday-week with a pair of impressive 2yo winners at Rosehill and Flemington.
Shoot Out
Graham and Linda Huddy whose
High Chaparral son
SHOOT OUT won 5 Gr1 races , have an exciting up and comer in the Chris Waller trained 2yo Sniper Fire, who scored for the second time at Rosehill, this time over 1500m.
“He’s just gone from strength to strength,” said Waller “and he’s on his way to being a handy 3yo that we’ll aim towards the G1 Guineas races.”
Making it a juvenile double for
High Chaparral on the day was David Hayes-trained
Vuelta, who scored handsomely at Flemington over 1400m.
He’s very sound and has a great constitution,” said stable representative Tom Dabering. “We’ll try to get 2yo black type in the
Listed Gibson-Carmichael Stakes in July but his long term aim is the
Gr1 Victoria Derby.”
A $100,000 NZB Premier purchase from Pencarrow Stud, Vuelta runs for a syndicate that includes Jonathan Munz and his breeder Sir Peter Vela.
The same day,
High Chaparral added two older metropolitan winners to his resume with 7yo
Sacred Flyer at Flemington and 7yo
Keep Cool at Rosehill.
That’s two Royal Ascot winners, a Brisbane SW, two 2yo winners and two older metropolitan winners …
All in a week… With 56 Stakes Winners to his resume and Champion Sire title HIGH CHAPARRAL is the real deal.
