An outstanding filly and a breeder with an uncanny ability to produce high-class winners, proved to be an unstoppable force in yet another Australian feature race last weekend.
WINX is a daughter of Street Cry and bred by John Camilleri’s Fairway Thoroughbreds. She won the Group 1 Queensland Oaks with authority at Doomben, coming from the second half of the field to run away with the fillies’ classic.
The victory came after WINX had finished second in the Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m) at Randwick in April.
As impressive as all that may be, the addition of WINX to the list of Group 1 winners bred by Camilleri and his wife Deborah, stands out as a stunning feature of the win.
This season alone, John and Deborah's Fairway Thoroughbreds has bred the Gr1 Golden Slipper winner VANCOUVER and Group 3 winner FIREWORKS, as well as Gr1 winner WINX, who between them, have won 10 stakes races.
In recent years, Fairway Thoroughbreds has bred other Group 1 winners, Dariana (Queensland Derby), Gathering (WATC Railway Stakes) and Invest (South Australian Oaks).
Indirectly, they are all the result of a John and Deborah Camilleri’s purchase of a share in the good racehorse named Fairway who won the Group 1 Canterbury Guineas and the Group 1 AJC Derby as a three-year-old.
“It all started when a syndicator offered me a share in horse which turned out to be Fairway,” said Camilleri.
Since then, John has turned his racing enjoyment into a breeding business and accumulated a small but top-class broodmare band.
WINX is a daughter of the Al Akbar mare Vegas Showgirl.
She was purchased by Queensland owner Peter Tighe’s Magic Bloodstock for $230,000 when offered by Coolmore Stud, on behalf of Fairway Thoroughbreds at the 2013 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
Dynamic Syndications purchased a beautifully bred filly with the looks to match at this year's Magic Millions Sale on the Gold Coast.
By MORE THAN READY - the Champion Sire from VINTEDGE a Gr2 winning mare.
She too, was purposely bred by John and Deborah's Fairway Thoroughbreds and the way they have the Midas touch when it comes to breeding Champions, we are certainly well placed with our filly.
Add in the silky skills of Australia's First Lady of Training GAI WATERHOUSE as her trainer and then, the lure of the Magic Millions $10m annual raceday, this filly has enormous upside.
Then with her boasting such a brilliant pedigree, this should ensure excellent residual value upon racetrack retirement. With the way the broodmare market is running hot, if she was to be successful at Black Type Level then on her pedigree she could be worth telephone numbers.
