Hot on the heels of our own story yesterday about Dynamic Syndications harmonious statistical relationship with Super Sire
EXCEED AND EXCEL, it was announced today that the owners of Champion mare
BLACK CAVIAR have decided that they like the stallion as much as we do and have chosen the sire for their Champion mare.
Standing in 2013 at an advertised fee of $88,000, Exceed and Excel will be crowned Champion Australian Sire for this 2012-13 season following a brilliant year that has seen him produce the winners of more than $11.2 million prizemoney.
The Darley stallion, has just completed a Northern Hemisphere season at Darley's Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket, England, was chosen ahead of reigning Australian Champion Sire Fastnet Rock and Champion Sire of 2yo’s More Than Ready.
Exceed And Excel’s best performers this year have been Golden Slipper winner Overreach and dual Gr1 winner Guelph, who between them, won Sydney’s Triple Crown for 2yo’s.
Black Caviar was retired after winning her 25th straight race, the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes over 1200m at Randwick on April 13th, by coincidence, a race sponsored by Darley.
The rising seven-year-old mare by Bel Esprit, out of the Desert Sun mare Helsinge, was never beaten in her 25 race starts and was Head of the 2011 and 2012 World Thoroughbred Rankings (Sprint) and she still retains the title of the World’s Best Racehorse for the period December 1st, 2012 to July 14th, 2013 with a rating of 130.
She was the Horse of the Year in Australia in 2010/11 and 2011/12 and Champion Sprinter over the same seasons and will achieve the same status for the 2012/13 season.
Exceed And Excel, by Danehill out of the Lomond mare Patrona, stands the Southern Hemisphere season at Darley’s Kelvinside property in the Hunter Valley, at a fee of $88,000, inc GST.
The dual Gr1 winner, including the VRC Newmarket Handicap over 1200m at Flemington (just like Black Caviar), has progressed to being a top-line dual hemisphere stallion with his Gr1 winners including:
Excelebration (IRE), due to commence his first southern season at Coolmore;
Reward For Effort, standing at Chatswood Stud, Vic (the Most Popular 1st Season Sire in Victoria with 150 mares and Most Popular 2nd Season Sire in Australia in 2012 covering 173 mares);
Helmet, standing at Darley Vic;
2013 Golden Slipper winner
Overreach;
2013 ATC Sires’ Produce and Champagne Stakes winner
Guelph
2011 Nunthorpe Stakes winner
Margot Did (IRE).
Exceed And Excel is the 2012/13 Australian Leading Sire with 267 runners, 140 winners, 17 Stakes Winners and over $11.2 million in progeny earnings. He is the:
Leading Sire on Earnings
Leading Sire on Stakes Winners
Leading Sire on Stakes Wins
Leading Sire of 2yo’s on Earnings
Leading Sire of 2yo’s by Stakes Winners
Leading Sire of 2yo’s by Stakes Wins
Second on Number of Individual Winners (1st Bel Esprit)
Third on Leading Sire of Gr1 Wins (1st Fastnet Rock, 2nd Commands)
Third on the 2yo Sires by Individual Winners (1st Choisir, 2nd Northern Meteor, Equal 3rd Sebring)
Exceed And Excel obviously impressed Black Caviar’s connections with an incredible year at stud. He sired the first and second placed runners in the Gr1Golden Slipper, and also talented filly Guelph, captured both the Sires’ Produce Gr1 and Champagne Stakes Gr1.
Exceed And Excel genetically rates very highly with Black Caviar based on Danehill and his sons when they are bred to Royal Academy line mares, this is the same cross that produced top runner and sire Fastnet Rock.
Another positive for the mating is that Black Caviar’s own family has had success with the sire. Black Caviar’s second dam, Scandinavia, produced Gr2 winning 1000m specialist Wilander to Exceed And Excel.
Exceed And Excel is a son of Australia’s most successful sire and one of the most successful shuttle sires in Danehill. He is out of the mare Patrona, a winning daughter of Lomond.
Exceed And Excel raced exclusively in Australia where he was a multiple stakes winner.
Exceed And Excel was a stakes winner as a 2yo winning the Gr2 Todman Slipper Trial. As a 3yo, he became Champion Sprinter in Australia, winning one of the premier sprints, the Gr1 Newmarket Handicap. He also scored in the Rupert Clarke Gr 1 setting a new course record.
With a total of twelve starts and seven wins, two at the highest level, Exceed And Excel retired to stud with a Timeform rating of 126.
He began his stud career in the Hunter Valley covering a large book of mares. Darley decided to send Exceed And Excel to Europe for a Northern Hemisphere covering season. He stood at Kildangan Stud in 2005 for his first Northern Hemisphere season then returned to Kildangan Stud in Ireland in 2007 at a fee of E10,000.
Since then Exceed And Excel has stood his Northern Hemisphere time at Dalham Hall Stud in England at a fee of £35,000.
Exceed And Excel has had great success as a sire in both Australia and Europe. He is the sire of Group 1 winners Helmet, Overreach, Guelph, and Dynamic Syndications own Reward For Effort.
Among his best in Europe are Champion miler and exciting young sire Excelebration as well as Group 1 sprinter Margot Did.
Among his multiple stakes winners in Australia and Europe include Sidestep, Fullbright, Masamah, Wilander, Best Terms. Infamous Angel etc.
Black Caviar was a powerhouse sprinter just like Exceed And Excel and he’s proven that he can sire equally fast types to himself.
The foal should, just like its parents, have speed to burn with both being Champion Sprinters.
The resulting offspring with Black Caviar will be inbred 3mx5f to Danzig and 4mx4mx5fx6f to his sire Northern Dancer.
The mating is quite interesting but no one will know for certain until the resulting foal hits the race track in the hope it can build on its sire and dam’s record.
The owners have hinted that Black Caviar’s foal will not be sold. If the foal did go up for public auction it is certain that it would probably surpass the record set by Black Caviar’s half brother by Redoute’s Choice (also a son of Danehill) when that colt sold for $5,000,000.
EXCEED AND EXCEL = a True Champion
If he’s good enough for the owners of Black Caviar to back him with their mare, then obviously the thoroughbred industry is awakening to and giving due recommendation for the deeds of this spectacular sire.
We have 20% remaining in our spectacular colt by EXCEED AND EXCEL from YOU SMARTY PANTS – bred on the same cross as GUELPH and to be trained by PETER MOODY.
This is the one !
