Not every Yearling at the Magic Millions Yearling Sales is bred to be a sprinter.
So, when we were researching the 1030 lots available in the catalogue, one particular filly took our interest for being commercial, capable of racing beyond 2000m as a 3yo.
By the Champion Racehorse and Champion Sire MEDAGLIA D'ORO, the shuttle stallion who stands at Darley in the Hunter Valley and Darley in the USA, he is capable of getting progeny over all distances, as was evident when Gai Waterhouse trained his son VANCOUVER to win the Golden Slipper and current stakes winner ASTERN.
Our filly is from CATALAN BAY a winner of 3 races from 1200m to 1600m. Our filly is her third foal.
Her 2nd Dam is KIM ANGEL 14 wins 10 at Stakes Class. A Gr1 winner of the WA Derby and a Gr3 winner and 8 x LR Wins.
CATALAN BAY is also a ½ sister to SW KIM CLASSIC 4 wins in LR., and to SP KIM CHINA.
Her 3rd Dam is Stakes Winner CHANCERY STAR, 6 wins to 1800m inc Gr2 WATC Champion Fillies Gr2 and2 x LR Winner.
Offered as Lot 921 by Element Hill, when we inspected her we were very pleased as to the way the filly presented and when our veterinarian passed her physically and on x-rays, we were determined that we should buy this Classics bred daughter of Medaglia D'Oro.
After a short tussle in the ring the filly was knocked down to Team Dynamic for $70,000 + GST = $77,000.
This quality individual will not be pushed as an early 2yo. She will be given the time necessary to develop and mature into a late 2yo and then be aimed to be a Classics contender at 3.
Then she will head into the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott stables to be polished into the sparkling gem she is destined to be.
