Facing the starter for just the second time in her career, up from 1400m on debut to 1600m, blinkers on.
Add in the fact there were two short priced favourites the task looked as steep as Everest.
That was the task facing
Dynamic 3yo filly NAGAS when she lined up in race 1 on the programme at Tatura on Tuesday afternoon.
NAGAS records a strong win at only her second race start
Our
Peter Moody trained filly had stable connections upbeat after her work had been solid leading into this race and rider
Daniel Stackhouse had worked the filly in blinkers on Saturday morning, declaring that she had improved significantly on her first up run. Connections were confident the filly would put in a forward display and
trainer Peter Moody was confident saying “with average racing luck she was a genuine each way hope.”
As it turns out, Peter’s judgement was right again.

Daniel Stackhouse brings NAGAS back to scale - Victorious
Our filly had drawn barrier 1 and the plan was to be positive from the
inside draw, pushing up to hold the fence for the first furlong and then
see how things panned out.
Daniel Stackhouse had
our filly placed beautifully on jumping, holding the fence whilst 3
others rolled forward to eye-ball our filly including both favourites.
Daniel just held the fence, making those out wide, work hard. Eventually
they were forced to kick up and as a result, they gave us an easy
trail, third the fence with cover. As we turned for home the only issue
was to be able to get a split.
We had a few anxious strides as
those in front were racing tight and a bit wayward. Eventually at the
100m a split appeared and the filly grabbed the bit and drove through
the gap. She finished hard to fight off the eventual runner up and win
by a head in a driving finish.
It was a terrific result for a filly who obviously wants further and a roomy track to see her at her best.
Post Race Winning Interview with
Dynamic Syndications Independent Bloodstock Consultant & Co-Owner of NAGAS Gary Mudgway
Gary Mudgway congratulates and thanks Daniel Stackhouse post race
Daniel Stackhouse said “I knew we had a couple to beat and I was able to get them to do a bit of work until the first corner and the topweight came over - my filly came back underneath me and relaxed beautiful. The split came at the right time and she had a nice kick and showed a good turn of foot and hit the line and won well.”
“I wasn’t confident that the split would come and I had to bide my time because I knew the horse on the outside in front of me of David Hayes was weakening and was going to drop off so I could get a run through.”
“She’s improved a lot this filly, from her first start at Cranbourne, so I think she can keep going on with it.”
“She will definitely be able to stretch out over more ground, she’s the sort of filly that relaxes well and the blinkers definitely played their part today.
“I said to Peter (Moody) on Saturday when I worked her that she’s improved a lot since Cranbourne run so she’s got plenty of upside to her.”
NAGAS pulled up a treat after her race
NAGAS was purchased at the Magic Millions yearling sales in 2014 with the view that we were buying a filly bred to be a 2000m to 2400m galloper and after today’s event, we remain confident that this is exactly the style of filly we have.

NAGAS as a yearling at the Sales
By Testa Rossa out of Rocotto (by Brocco), the mare was a winner of 4 races for her trainer Peter Moody from 1800m to 2250m.
Peter Moody felt mum had plenty of ability and may have measured into an Oaks filly but injury cost her realising her full potential. Hence why it was logical to give her daughter to Peter to train.
We remain hopeful this was the start of a long and successful racing career of NAGAS for her owners.
Congratulations to our terrific group of owners that race NAGAS:
