WHO IS BERNIE IBINI?
Known as
Bernie Ibini, the
25yo Bernie Alpha Ibini-Isei (born 1992), is an Australian professional footballer (soccer player) who in the 2016/17 season will play for Hyundai A-League club Sydney FC, on loan from Belgium side, Club Brugge.
In 2014 Bernie was both a Socceroo and Foxtel A-League All Star.
Born in Port Harcourt Nigeria, Bernie Ibini immigrated to Australia with his family as a child. He grew up in Sydney's inner western suburbs. His passion for football was obvious from a young age and as a 6 year old, his family registered him to play for his local club Earlwood Wanderers.
He has a sister, Princess Ibini-Isei, who is also a footballer, playing for Sydney FC in the W-League and she too is an Australian U-20 team member.
Bernie started playing football for NSW Premier League side Blacktown City at youth level.
He was immediately recognised as a player with immense potential and was selected to join Westfields Sports High School.
International
Bernie Ibini made his debut for the Australian U-20 team in 2011, in a 1–0 win against the Germany U-20 side.
On 7 March 2011 Bernie was selected to represent the Australia Olympic football team in an Asian Olympic Qualifier match against Iraq.
On 10 October 2014 he made his debut for the Socceroo’s (Australian senior team), starting in a match against the United Arab Emirates in preparation for the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.
Club Brugge
2014-15 having completed his A-League season with Sydney FC on loan from Shanghai East Asia, it was announced that Bernie had gained permission from his contracted club Shanghai East Asia to travel to Belgium for a medical with Club Brugge.
Shanghai who had Bernie on contract, were unable to retain him due to their foreign player quota having already been filled.
Bernie signed a 3-year deal with the club on 5 June 2015, where it was announced that Bernie would wear their number 11 shirt.
After being ruled out for the 2015–16 Belgian Pro League season due to a broken leg he suffered in his first training session with Club Brugge, it was announced on 21 July 2016 that Ibini would return to Sydney FC on a 12 month loan deal once again.

Dreams Alive For Sky Blue Bernie Ibini - Sunday 24 July 2016
Having spent a season out with injury, Sydney FC winger Bernie Ibini says his dreams haven’t been halted as he prepares for his second stint in Sky Blue.
Ibini fractured his leg training at Belgium side Club Brugge and has been in recovery since, however the winger said he’s pushing himself to get back on the pitch as he noted the changes at the Sky Blues in the year he’s been away.
“All my dreams to be a part of the national squad and make my mark in Europe are still alive and that’s why I’m back here to get back to my full fitness and enjoy playing again,” Ibini said.
“The leg is going ok, I’ve got a lot of work to do still but I’ll be working hard everyday to get back on the pitch.
“It looks like they’ve made a lot of changes, it’s very exciting and I’m very happy to be a part of it,” Bernie continued.
“It’s a good chance to push myself, you need a strong squad to win things so the more competition the better.”
Bernie added that there was no hesitation in returning to the Sky Blues when the offer arose, especially as he’s pleased to be with his family again, follow his tough year spent in Europe.
Fox Sport News - Saturday 23 July 2016
Bernie Ibini remains bullish about his international aspirations despite a horror leg injury in first season at Belgium side Club Brugge. He’s now back at Sydney FC on a one (1) season loan deal.
“All my dreams to be part of the national squad consistently and make my mark in Europe still alive and that’s why I’m back here (Sydney FC) to get back to my full fitness and enjoy playing again and then, head back to Europe at the end of the season.”
Sydney FC bring Bernie Ibini home - Friday 22 July 2016
Bernie Ibini says he’s excited to be back at Sydney FC and work with his mentor Graham Arnold.
Being back at this great club and working with Arnie (coach Graham Arnold) again and the medical staff, with them having the belief they can get me back on the pitch was also a major thing (coming back to Sydney FC) and being back with my family during this time, was something I think is going to be good for me.
Arnie gave me a call and said “what’s happening with your leg” and from there, it followed on and I’m back here at Sydney FC because it’s very tough being away from your family. So it was a tough time but I’m a strong person and I continue to go in everyday and work hard. Now to come back home to be with my family and friends, it’s very exciting and I’m looking forward to it.
STAR FORWARD Returns to Sydney FC - Thursday 21 July 2016
Sydney FC has signed Hyundai A-League 2015 Grand Finalist Bernie Ibini on a season long loan deal.
The 24 year old, who starred for the Sky Blues during their record breaking run in the Hyundai A-League 2014/15 season, returns to his home city club following one season at Belgian Champions - Club Brugge.
Ibini who has already played for the Socceroos, will link up with his Sky Blues team mates and says he can’t wait to pull on the Sydney FC jersey again.
“I’m excited to be home and can’t wait to be back out in front of Sydney FC’s great fans,” said the pacey forward.
“I played some of the best football of my career the last time I was here and I’m confident I can do the same this time.
“Unfortunately injury cut short my season in Europe last year but with the facilities and quality of the medical staff at Sydney FC, I’ll be ready to go in round one,” he continued.
“We had a great run during my last season here and there’s no reason why we can’t repeat that with the quality in our squad this year.”
Head Coach Graham Arnold said he was delighted to bring Ibini back to the Hyundai A-League and is happy with how his squad changes are progressing.
“I think everyone is well aware of what a great talent Bernie Ibini is and how highly I rate him,” he said.
“He is quick, has a great football brain and plays quality attacking football. He also has a fearsome shot and I know opposition defences do not enjoy playing against him.
“Bernie was a big part of the Sydney FC side who reached a record number of points and goals in my first season at the club and his quality will only add to the talent we have here.
“He will be a huge asset to the club and it’s fantastic for the Hyundai A-League to have him back in the competition.”

Australian international winger Bernie Ibini is on the cusp of sealing a move back to the A-League with a return to Sydney FC set to be concluded in the coming days.
The 23-year-old has agreed terms to a season-long loan deal back to the Sky Blues where he will be reunited with coach Graham Arnold who he previously played under at Central Coast Mariners and then again at Sydney FC.
It is understood the Sky Blues are in the final stages of negotiations with Belgian side Club Brugge over the terms of the loan deal which will be finalised in the coming days.
Bernie Ibini signed with Club Brugge at the start of last season but suffered a horrendous injury during the pre-season, suffering a broken leg in his first training session with the club.
