“Run – Run as fast as you can – but you can’t catch me – because I’m AREBEITSAM - man!”
Dynamic Syndications front-running ARBEITSAM, courtesy of his all the way win in the Gr 3, $150,000 The Daily Telegraph Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on Saturday 31 March, now heads to the world’s richest race over 1600m, the $3m Doncaster Mile next Saturday.
Jet pilot Tim Clark took the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained Arbeitsam ($4.20 equal favourite) straight to the front as the gates flung back from the 2000m start and it proved a winning move, as the 4yo Snitzel gelding led all-the-way for an impressive Group 3 success at his first look at the 2000m distance.
Tim gave
Arbeitsam a well-judged ride to dictate the race from the outset, peeling off several soft 13 seconds mid-race sectionals, despite having the field strung out over more than a dozen lengths by the 800m.
Being stalked by the in-form Canberra Cup winner Almost Court ahead of the Chris Waller-trained duo of McCreery and Mackintosh, Tim asked
Arbeitsam to increase the tempo at the 650m and rival jockey Christian Reith on Almost Court tried to increase the pressure aboard his mount, but
Arbeitsam was travelling too well.
Arbeitsam had his rivals off the bit and once Tim Clark put the pedal down in the final furlong,
Arbeitsam responded and recorded a terrific win over Maurus ($21) who ran home late for Corey Brown into a half-length second place, three-quarters of a length clear of Almost Court ($10) who had tracked
Arbeitsam throughout and held on for third.
Arbeitsam enjoyed his first victory at his fifth start since the Listed Rowley Mile (1600m) at Hawkesbury back in August last year and is now set to back-up on successive Saturdays and head into Royal Randwick for the $3 million The Star Doncaster Mile Group 1.
Dynamic Syndications Managing Director Dean Watt said “If you don’t plan you never get there and so much work had gone into this win. It’s been like military precision. It was no fluke – it was a result of a deliberate strategy hatched back in August 2017.”
“We wanted to have a throw at the stumps at the $1m Magic Millions Cup (1400m) in January, which we did second-up after a spell, where he ran a gallant runner-up before a short break and then we followed a specific set of lead-in races being the Liverpool City Cup (1300m), into the Ajax (1500m), into the Neville Sellwood (2000m), to be cherry-ripe to aim at the Doncaster (1600m).”
Gai Waterhouse, who trains in partnership with Adrian Bott, said that the win in the Neville Sellwood Stakes over the 2000m worked in nicely with plans to start the four-year-old in next week’s Group 1 $3m Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick, which is day one of The Championships.
Gai Waterhouse and her father, the late TJ Smith, have each trained seven winners of the Doncaster Mile and a victory for her this year would not only set a record but also be her first with her training partner Adrian Bott.
Gai Waterhouse said immediately after the race.
“Very pleased to see this Dynamic Syndications horse win. He has had his foot on the till for the last few starts. It was a lovely win. He is our Doncaster horse.”
Gai Waterhouse was asked if she
“liked Arbeitsam’s chances with a light weight in the Doncaster Mile?”
To which she quipped
“Is the Pope a Catholic!”
“Have your money on him!” Gai declared and it’s easy to understand her confidence because
Arbeitsam now drops 5.0kgs from 55.0kg over 2000m in the Neville Sellwood to a featherweight 50.0kg into the Doncaster Mile.
Gai added
“We specifically chose this race (the Group 3 $150,000 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) on Easter Saturday) to aid him to get into the Doncaster field instead of heading into the Doncaster Prelude” (the Group 3 $150,000 (1500m) held later on the day over the shorter distance).
“I just felt the 2000m would be easier (to come back in distance) than (going up in distance from) the 1500m Prelude.”
Australia’s First Lady of Racing said “To win a Doncaster you need a fast 2000m horse and I wanted him to have a good look at the 2000m today so he won’t be gasping at the end of the big Randwick mile. It a formula I’ve used before with great success”.
Waterhouse said “Did you see how cushily Tim Clark hard him going?”
“He didn’t over-extend him, he just got him into a beautiful rhythm and the gelding just kept extending.”
“I know they had a very big opinion of One Foot In Heaven, Chris Waller’s horse ($4.20 equal favourite), but I was really pleased to see this Dynamic (Syndications) horse win.”
Returning to scale, Tim Clark said Arbeitsam was “too strong.”
"He's a good, tough horse," he said.
"He makes his own luck. He's a pleasure to ride. He fights hard and he relaxed well too, which is a big help," Clark said.
Gai Waterhouse revealed that
the strapper of Arbeitsam, Farkhar Hussein,
had one hand up in the air signalling a win, from the 350m mark of
Saturday’s race and held it high until after
Arbeitsam crossed the line.
“He must have been relieved to not go the dreaded early crow,” Gai laughed.
Sadly for jockey Tim Clark, the featherweight of 50.0kgs
Arbeitsam will carry in the Doncaster is just far too light for Tim to waste down and achieve. We knew this would be the situation once weights for the great race were declared. So,
weeks ago we swooped upon leading Melbourne based jockey Michael Dee who can ride at the 50.0kgs.
Michael Dee won the Gr1 Vinery on Saturday with a bold front running display upon Hiyaam and Gai commented after that race
“We hope to see Michael ride Arbeitsam the same way next Saturday and see his smiling face returning to the winner’s circle.”
Nobody is under any illusions of the massive task ahead of Arbeitsam when taking on the best milers in Australia. However, to have made the field is a big accolade for the horse and the hard working Teams behind him at Tulloch Lodge and Dynamic who have spent countless hours mapping, analysing, considering and sweating all the one percent’s that need to all add up so our Dynamic Owners can live their dream.
Who knows what may happen?
He will be running along on pace with a postage stamp on his back saying “catch me if you can”.
Our Dynamic owners will now enjoy the excitement of having a runner on Day 1 of The Championships, in the time-honoured world’s richest mile race, trained by a living legend who knows what it takes to win the race having watched her father win it seven times and now Gai with seven wins of her own, is looking to add Adrian Bott’s name to the record books too.
For the Team at Dynamic Syndications, it will be our first Doncaster runner and with already 13 Gr1 Victories on the resume, we are always optimistic that he can add to the tally.
