For an uncomfortably long time down the Randwick straight in Wednesday’s Listed Tattersalls Club Carrington Stakes (1100m) at Randwick it looked as if the Gerald Ryan-trained Dances On Stars would be a tragedy beaten. Brenton Avdulla had a lapful of horse but he was shut out everywhere he went.
Finding a narrow seam close to home, Dances On Stars pounced to defeat Hidden Warrior by a short-neck with Dee'n'geea short-head back in third. "It was just a matter of whether the gap would come, said Avdulla.
"I tried nine times and missed and it was ten times lucky.” Winner of the Group III Kindergarten Stakes at Randwick at two, the son of Snitzel was stakes-placed three times in Brisbane but he has found going tougher in recent times.
"He’s a good honest little horse who doesn't have a lot of luck in his races,” Ryan said.
"We kept throwing him in the deep end as a two-year-old and three-year-old and he raced really competitive. The right decision was made to give him three months in the paddock and let him get over the winter and he has come back well.”
A $95,000 purchase by Dynamic Syndications at the 2011 Premier Yearling sale at Karaka, Dances is the tenth foal of the Melbourne winning Last Tycoon mare Starnet a half-sister to dual Group 1 winning mare Miss Margaret (Marscay).
