Dean Watt Bloodstock has been busy inspecting race fillies and mares at the annual
Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale and we are delighted to advise that we have purchased a race filly that will shortly be re-joining her original trainers -
Peter and Paul Snowden.
Purchased as
lot 681 she was knocked down to
Dean Watt Bloodstock for $46,000 + $4,600 GST =
$50,600.
SONOMA
From the draft of Darley Stud,
SONOMA (3yo Filly
EXCEED AND EXCEL / RIO OSA) is an impeccably bred daughter of Champion Sire Exceed and Excel from the multiple Stakes-Winning Canny Lad mare
RIO OSA.
RIO OSA
RIO OSA won 3 races -1 at 2- to 1400m inc VRC
Seppelt Wines Sprint H. LR and the Scone RC Dark Jewel H. LR and also
ran 4th in the Wenona Girl H LR.
PRESERVE
RIO OSA (by Canny Lad) is the Full-Sister to Group 1 Winner
PRESERVE (VRC Sires Produce Gr1).
PRESERVE is the Dam of twice Group 3 Winner and Gr3 and LR placed -
SAFEGUARD.
SAFEGUARD
MOST IMPORTANTLY -
SAFEGUARD is a Full Sister-in-Blood to SONOMA.
Both are by
EXCEED AND EXCEL from the
Canny Lad Full Sisters -
PRESERVE and RIO OSA.

Also important to note –
RIO OSA is a half-sister to the “best horse Peter Snowden ever trained” – the Group 1 Winner
DENMAN and he is going very well as a first season sire.
Whilst
RIO OSA’s half-sister is the dam of multiple Group Winner
SOUL (by Commands).
Since the catalogue went to print there have been significant updates to this filly’s pedigree.
Firstly,
SAFEGUARD has since run 2nd in the
Gr3 Gold Coast Guineas.
Secondly,
SHAUMARI (2yo f by
Medaglia d'Oro) who is a half-sister to
SAFEGUARD, has been Group placed on two occasions. She has run 3rd in both the
Gr3 BRC Champagne Classic and 3rd in the
Gr3 ATC Royal Randwick Stakes.
Sonoma has raced on 7 occasions to date and has finished
2nd on 4 occasions (all in a row) during her short career.
Dean Watt Bloodstock made contact with
Peter Snowden prior to the sale on the Gold Coast in relation to the dispersal of the
Darley stock. Having discussed all the horses
Darley were offering, Peter was confident that we should only
buy SONOMA because she has the ability to race through her grades and could well develop into a city class horse.
Watch the video of her 4 races where she runs second in a row.
Peter commented that “she had not much luck last preparation” and he
felt that “with a spell she would have her best preparations still in
front of her.”
He knew her to be sound and right and possess the ability that with a change of luck could see her salute in town.
We had the filly examined by our veterinarian prior to purchase and
received the all clear to proceed and post-sale, we have had the filly
undergo an endoscopic evaluation which she also passed.
The filly has currently had 9 weeks in the spelling paddock.
Our plan is to return the filly to Oak Ridge spelling farm for a further
3-4 weeks and then to begin pre-training with a view of heading into
Randwick late July and be ready to race mid-September.
Given her pedigree, previous racetrack performances and Peter’s recommendation, we feel that
SONOMA gives our clients a great chance of racetrack success, without having to wait too long.
Adding a win to her pedigree would spike her value significantly higher
as a broodmare upon eventual retirement and a city win would add even
further value, let alone the prizemoney she would win during that
process.
After discussing in depth
SONOMA with Peter, we also discovered the filly’s 2yo half-brother named
Crimson God was to quote the conversation, “A striking son of Lonhro”.
Crimson God was a highly impressive trial winner on the 21st of November
last year. Subsequent to the trial, Peter reported that Crimson God
showed signs of shin soreness and was returned to the paddock to enjoy a
well-earned spell.
Peter feels that
Crimson God is
“A Grade”. He has shown the Darley stable a lot of ability in a short amount of time and Peter suggests as a Spring 3yo,
Crimson God could be a major player in some of the featured races.
The breeding stock market is going gang-busters.
Record prices are being smashed lot after lot. There is a huge demand
for quality young mares. She is already assured of her commercial value
when she goes to stud but the further upside here is
enormous.
