ABEITSAM -
a magnificent looking, tough, tenacious and certainly exhilarating front-runner, demonstrated his huge potential as a high class staying talent, when he
demoralised his opposition in Race 3 at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, the $100,000 ATC Merrylands RSL Club Premier’s Cup Prelude over 1800m.
ARBEITSAM winning Race 3 at Rosehill Saturday 12/8/17 - Premier's Cup Prelude
Everybody loves a bold front runner, especially one that takes no prisoners and ARBEITSAM is fast earning the moniker of “cult-hero”.
Official Photo Finish - a superb win
Competing for the first time against both (a) older rivals and (b) open company, this event turned into a one horse affair as our odds-on favourite
ARBEITSAM jumped straight to the lead and proceeded to run-out an eased down, 4.75 lengths winner.
The 4-year-old Snitzel gelding is owned by a
top team of loyal Dynamic Syndications owners.
ARBEITSAM went into this race with two wins and one second from his three starts during the month of July and he further enhanced this impressive winning record with
another emphatic victory.
His peers are nowhere in sight - a lovely way to earn $76,500
Rated beautifully in front by pilot Tommy Berry, ARBEITSAM had his rivals “off the bit” with 600 metres of the contest still to run and quickly established an unassailable lead entering the Rosehill straight.
The final furlong of this contest only saw the progressive gelding dash further away from his rivals before passing the winning post in genuine, unextended canter.
Tommy & "Artie" returning to scale
Trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s mixture of race distances this preparation for ARBEITSAM has been a masterstroke, keeping the speed in his legs and as a result, the headline four-year-old is thriving.
The "INNER SANCTUM" - Gai has the owners full concentration as she described her tactics to win the race
Attention to detail - Gai & Fiona go over the speed map whilst Adrian and Tommy re-confirm tactics before Tommy is legged aboard
Any concerns punters may have had that
ARBEITSAM (a $1.95 favourite) might struggle at the distance, were dispelled with this Race Record-breaking win.
Tommy Berry gives a victory salute and a Winner's Grin - returning to scale.
Jockey Tommy Berry said “Gai and Adrian broke the rules of convention with ARBEITSAM by going up in distance, bringing him back then going back up to 1800m but he just keeps winning.”
“I pressed the button on him a long way out and thought when am I going to find the bottom of him — but I never did.
Team Dynamic boss Dean Watt & Tommy Berry celebrate with a winner's hug
“He ran the 1800m right out and 2000m won’t be a problem for him. Perhaps 2400m might test him but I’ve learned over the years to never second guess Gai.’’
That's 5 Wins for ARBEITSAM
Gai Waterhouse was trackside for ARBEITSAM’s domination and in the winner’s circle told our owners “He’s the most improved horse in the stable and that win was just like he was at Randwick doing morning trackwork”
Winning Owners in the Winner's Circle - Their smiles are golden.
Adrian Bott stated to the press the win has
“opened up a lot of doors” for the promising gelding.
He jokingly said
“A race like The Metropolitan (Gr1 - 2400m) wasn’t originally an option for this horse but I wouldn’t rule anything out with him,’’ Adrian laughed.
ARBEITSAM has now earned his shot at black-type.
“We have a lot of options now. We could look at dropping back to the 1600m of the Rowley Mile at Hawkesbury or we could go up to 1900m for the Premier’s Cup or the 2100m of the Wyong Gold Cup.
“We will nominate for these races and weigh-up which we feel is the best race for him.’’
ARBEITSAM, raced by the Dynamic Syndications team, scored his fifth win (plus five placings) from just 12 starts, taking his career earnings to $385,400 — with the promise of a lot more to come.
“He is a brilliant horse to have in the yard, he is very progressive,’’ Bott continued.
“He is rock-hard fit now, he responds well to racing and thrives on his work.’’
"He's a very versatile horse. He put himself on the speed and still produce a turn of foot at the end of that."
Adrian Bott, who said
“connections opted for the 1800m Prelude over a 1500m benchmark” was not surprised by
ARBEITSAM proving too strong under Tommy Berry.
"He was able to get into a beautiful rhythm throughout. There was a little bit of pressure midway but that came off pretty quickly," Adrian added.
ARBEITSAM officially finished
4.75 lengths clear of the runner-up Classic Uniform with Sultan of Swing finishing third some 0.8L further back.
As Gai Waterhouse explained to the Dynamic Syndications team, in harbouring dreams of winning Big Group 1 miles (1600m) in the Spring / Autumn you need to have a horse with speed in his legs plus the ability to win at stakes level past a mile, to ensure your hitting the line when under pressure.
History shows True miler's seldom win races like the Doncaster / Epsom - it's the horses that can run a strong 10 furlongs (2,000m) that have the advantage in these pressure events.
Hence why Gai has tested
ARBEITSAM beyond 1600m twice, to ensure he is both genetically and physically strong enough to give consideration in these big Handicaps.
Winner's are Grinners !

A $120,000 yearling sale purchase from the Magic Millions, ARBEITSAM has so far $385,400 in prizemoney.
Last season ARBEITSAM was officially the “KING of BOBS” as he was the leading male Racehorse, picking up $65,000 in bonus prizemoney.
Dynamic Syndications also nominated ARBEITSAM (when he was a yearling) for BOBS Extra, (1800m plus, 4yo plus).
In winning this event, not only did ARBEITSAM earn $54,000 to the winner, he also picked up an extra $22,500 Bonus prizemoney.
That has taken his cumulative BOBS bonuses total to now $87,500 with more still on offer.
Just how good is Arbeitsam?
Jockey Tommy Berry is adamant Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott haven't found the bottom of ARBEITSAM, as our free-wheeling front-runner ran his rivals into the ground - he also gave
Intergaze's 20-year-old track record a fright.
The heavily backed ARBEITSAM ran a sizzling 1:48.37.
To put this run into perspective, this was just 0.38 secs (2.6 lengths) outside the Track Record of 1:47.99 set 20 years ago in 1997 by INTERGAZE when he defeated MIGHT AND POWER in the Gr1 Canterbury Guineas.
There is little doubt ARBEITSAM would have broken that mark had Tommy Berry asked it of the horse, instead of having such an easy time in front and easing the horse down after sneaking a peak at the big on-course screen and seeing how far he was in front, he eased down over the final 75 metres.
Tommy Berry sneaks a peak at the Big Screen
However in the process, ARBEITSAM shattered the Race Record taking an amazing 4.56 seconds off the previous best time set in 2011 by FORETELLER (a 3 x Gr1 Winner) which had stood at 1:52.93.
With approximate measurements of 7 lengths per 1 second, that equals an incredible 31.75 lengths faster.
Breaking it down further, 1 length = (from nose to tail is 8 feet) = 2.4 metres. Therefore 31.75 lengths x 2.4 metres = 76.2 metres faster than the previous Race Record.
As far as the Open 3yo+ Class Record was concerned, it was set 14 years ago at 1:49.06 by CATECHISM on 2/08/2003. ARBEITSAM ran 0.69 seconds (4.8 lengths) faster.
Significantly, the final 600 metres of the contest was run in a very slick 34.64s on the Good 3 racing surface. An amazingly fast sectional considering the way the horse was under no pressure and in-fact, was eased down 75m from home.
This prompted our team to keep all our options open as the four-year-old is set for either
Hawkesbury's Rowley Mile or Premier's Cup or Wyong Gold Cup next.
Tommy Berry said
"I wouldn't mind taking him with me (to HK)" as Tommy jets out next week to take up a contract in Hong Kong.
"I kept thinking the whole way down the straight, 'when's he going to hit his top' because I pressed him so far out but I never found it.
“That says to me he's much better than the horses he met today and he will get over further. He might be a bit better than OK and today won't be his last win."
Adrian Bott added
"He loves his work and he's got so much substance, there's so much depth to him. You give him the work and he really thrives and responds to it and he just asks for more. He's the perfect horse for the stable."
“He’s a very exciting horse that keeps improving.”
