With already 14 spectacular yearlings on our books after the Magic Millions (12) and NZ Premier (2) our team at Dynamic were only aiming for the top shelf at the 2017 Inglis Classic.
Simply we have been buying the
BEST OF THE BEST and we were not lowering our strict selection standards just to have weak pedigrees or weak horses (or both) on our books. We leave those to the others.
Our motto hasn’t changed and never will
“RACE THE BEST WITH THE BEST”.
Unless the yearling could
value add to our stable and give our Owners access to the very best, we had no desire to buy.
Especially as
Inglis still have their better sales to come, with the Melbourne Premier and the Australian Easter Yearling Sales only a matter of a few weeks away.
From the 600 lots in the Inglis Classic Sale, we had identified only
38 yearlings we considered worthy to inspect. That list was whittled down to just
10 yearlings for X-ray inspection and of those,
only 4 individuals survived our strict policy of “if in doubt, rule it out.”
So with 4 yearlings to bid on, we were hopeful of securing one or two of these.
The first 3 came and went. Two of these sold on Day 1 and we considered they sold way over their true market value, so we wish those buyers well.
On Day 2, we were under bidder at $190,000 on a $200,000 yearling but we had reached our limit. We had $180,000 + one bid. Being disciplined, we walked away, wishing luck to its new owners.
On Day 3, we had interest in just one yearling and
it is now Dynamic.
Purchasing bloodstock is both a business and an art. Knowledge and sound judgement is matched to an intrinsic “gut feel” that this yearling will develop into the Champion that your intuition is telling you it can be.

Offered by leading Hunter Valley NEWGATE FARM, this Brown Colt was a perfect specimen of a Lonhro.
Athletic and well balanced, with a fantastic loose, easy action, the colt walked like a panther.
With excellent size and conformation and incredible scope to grow into his frame as he matures, this colt was a class yearling.
With a highly commercial pedigree and an A+++ genetic pedigree rating score, this colt was passed clean by our contracted veterinarian Dr. Tim Roberts and backed that up by a spotless set of X-rays, matched by a clear endoscopic inspection, this LONHRO colt ticked all our boxes.

With all the boxes ticked, it was just a matter of price. Our team valued him at $125,000 + one bid.
We were hopeful of buying him but unsure where the market would be late in the sale.
Dynamic Syndications and Newgate Farm have developed an excellent working relationship and we love buying their yearlings. We also receive good information flow on the horse’s history and a
trust has been built between the powerhouse thoroughbred nursery and Australia’s leading syndicators.
At the close of Day 2 we had a chat with the team to inquire where they were thinking the reserve may be set. With several reads of the X-rays in the repository, the Newgate Team were confident the horse would sell well over $100,000.
We thought it would as well but were not going to chase it.
We had set our ceiling price – it was just a matter did we have enough ammunition or did we just wait for the Premier and Easter.
With just 4 lots to go before Lot 538 was in the sale ring, we approached the Newgate Team to ask where they had set their reserve.
Under the new Code of Conduct, it’s all about Full Disclosure and the Newgate Team were happy to share this information with us.
The Newgate boys replied openly that, based upon the large volume of X-ray inspections by various vets and based upon the number of physical inspections the horse had received, they felt they didn’t need to protect their colt, because market demand would do that for them. They told us they were putting a low reserve of $75,000 just in case - but were confidently thinking that was irrelevant because it would bring well
over $100,000 and closer to $150,000 or more.
We thanked them and walked away happy in the knowledge we had up to $60,000 ($135,000 max) if we needed to fire that shot, to battle to buy him.
As the bidding unfolded, the auctioneer was only going up in $5,000 bids from $40,000. That was surprising but we were happy. It’s not where the bidding starts, it starts it’s where it finishes.
We were well positioned on the middle $5,000 bids. We were at $45,000, $55,000, $65,000, then the bidding went $70,000 which
we immediately countered with $75,000.
Fantastic, we were on the reserve and from here on we knew every bid is playing for keeps.
Then the market went quite. The auctioneers working the bidding calls as hard as they could - but there was no reply from the audience.
Then the auctioneer played their favourite card and called that “the horse was on the market and would be sold so bid up to buy.”
Again the market was silent and hammer fell.
“DYNAMIC” “Congratulations boys you have brought a top colt.”
We looked across to the Newgate team - that were stunned.
Henry Field came across and congratulated us on our success but lamenting the price.
“He’s too good a colt for that Deano, we’ll buy a share.”
“He’s been such a good horse all the way through and we would have to pay a fortune to buy him back as a stallion prospect in a few year’s time if he hits.” Henry said.
“We’ll stay in and race him with you and your owners. We think he has a good future and would love to see him on the roster at Newgate.”
We were delighted to welcome NEWGATE FARM / SF Bloodstock into the ownership.
Importantly, it gives us enormous confidence that we have a quality horse.
Horses don’t know what we pay for them – only humans do !
We’re keen to offer our owners in the coming days
a wonderful colt by a Champion from a Group 1 Winner to race in partnership with the most progressive stud in the Hunter Valley - the stud that bred and sold him.
Certainly we will be living the dream with the right industry players.
Prices will be determined in the following days. Stay tuned !
