The 2016 Magic Millions was a brutal sale for buyers and a bonanza for sellers, as records tumbled across all categories. Prices skyrocketed based upon an influx of global buyers who underpinned the top end based upon, favourable exchange rates and the new phenomenon of the globalisation of the thoroughbred industry.
These are the STATS:
SOLD 599 (554)
Passed In 69 (75) ,
Average $194,359, ($167,645)
Median $150,000, ($130,000)
Clearance 89.67% (88.08)
This forced the local top end buyers down into the competitive middle market where the demand for quality was strong from the fall of the first hammer, to the fall of the last.
Having worked hard on the catalogue leading into the sale and then pounding the pathways over the five days leading into the sale, Team Dynamic had arrived at the complex with a short list of
310 yearlings to inspect and we whittled that list down after 3 rounds of inspections and then x-ray reports, to 75 qualified lots to bid upon.
As a
Member of the Bloodstock Agents Federation of Australia and a qualified thoroughbred valuer, Dynamic boss Dean Watt and his team were confident we had the ceiling prices accurately determined but we were caught by surprise by some of the illogical prices being splashed about by overseas buyers, who were reaping the advantage of a weak Aussie Dollar against the greenback and other currencies. It created a bidding orgy where ridiculous monies were being thrust upon vendors in what was often a case of pure gluttony and self-fulfilling indulgence by inflated wallets of overseas visitors. The first casualty in any war is the truth and in this case, buyers were disregarding true value in pure ego driven desire to get set upon a horse.
Whilst Dynamic Syndications in 2015 took 14 yearlings out of this sale ring, our due diligence and attention to detail ensured that in 2016 despite swinging and missing on 67 lots, we did manage to hit the ball out of the park on 8 separate occasions, ensuring we secured 6 masculine and magnificent Colts and 2 fabulous Fillies to race in our Dynamic Syndications colours.
Of these, 7 were specifically purchased for Gai Waterhouse and a particular filly was identified and purchased for Gerald Ryan.
