The
MICK PRICE trained
Lankan Rupee (somewhat controversially) missed out on the Victorian Horse of the Year Award but his deeds during the 2013/14 still led to a major victory at Victorian racing’s night of nights.
LANKAN RUPEE
His likable trainer
MICK PRICE, was awarded his first
“Fred Hoysted Medal.”
MICK PRICE
MICK PRICE who is based at
Caulfield, received the prestigious award that acknowledges the most outstanding training performance on Victorian tracks for the season.
A selection committee headed by the Australian Trainers’ Association, nominates a finalist each month, taking into account performances during that period, before voting on an overall winner at the end of the season.
Mick Price clinched the award on the back of his deeds in March, in which he prepared
Lankan Rupee to win the $1 million
Group 1 Newmarket Handicap at Flemington – a run that saw the horse crowned the
“world’s best sprinter.”
The popular trainer said it was a huge surprise to him to be heading home with the medal, suggesting he felt out of place among the likes of Hall of Fame trainers Bart Cummings, Lee Freedman and David Hayes.
“I feel a little bit like the odd man out,” Price said, glancing at the shiny medal that had been draped around his neck.
“it is a great honour to win this award.”
Price collected 21 votes for his deeds during the month of March to record a two-vote win over joint runners-up Gai Waterhouse and Robbie Laing, who both gained 19 votes for their efforts during November.
Fred Hoysted Medal Voting: Mick Price (March) 21, Gai Waterhouse (November) 19, Robbie Laing (November) 19, Darren Weir (December) 16, Darren Weir (May) 16, Mick Price (February) 14, Robert Heathcote (October) 11, Mick Price (September) 8, Ciaron Maher (July) 8, Mark Kavanagh (August) 7, Darren Weir (April) 7, Ciaron Maher (June) 3, Darren Weir (January) 1, Robbie Laing (June) 0.
The Fred Hoysted Award is named after the
Hall of Fame trainer and is awarded to the most outstanding trainer of the season as voted by a panel nominated by the Australian Trainers’ Association.
The prestigious Fred Hoysted Medal recognises outstanding training performances on Victorian racetracks.
Fred Hoysted won a record 17 Trainers’ Premierships between 1933 and 1958.
Fred is best known for training New Zealander Rising Fast to the second of his two Caulfield Cup wins but his many other achievement include preparing 20 individual two-year-old winners in 1953/54.
The voting for the medal is conducted monthly, enabling the judging panel headed by Australian Trainers Association to acknowledge more trainers than ever before for their training feats.
The winner is selected from 12 monthly finalists at the conclusion of each racing season.
