There is nothing more exciting than to watch a race where the
leader sets a
fast pace and establishes a
huge lead mid-race. It sets up for a thrilling finish for
Owners, connections, punters, and spectators alike. In part because its
rebellious. It’s against the
“vanilla” race patterns seen in most events.
Can the tearaway leader keep going? Will it run out of petrol and get swamped late? Who chasing can catch it? These are just some of the questions that fill the minds of those watching.
On Wednesday at Randwick’s Kensington track, Race 7 the HEINEKEN HANDICAP a Benchmark 72 over 1400m was taken out by Dynamic Syndications sprinter ESCAPED (5yo g. Exceed And Excel ex Se Sauver) on a Soft 5 surface, in a Time: 1:22.85, Last 600m 0:35.52, picking up the first prize cheque of $22,000.
ESCAPED wins with authority
ESCAPED ($9) won by
2.42 lengths over DARLEB ($19) with BLUFF ’N’ BLUSTER ($8)
4.32 lengths third and race favourite SEQANA ($5) 4.35 fourth.
ESCAPED has taken his record to
16 starts: 4 Wins: 2 Seconds: 1 Third and $143,830 Prizemoney.
Ridden by jet pilot Nash Rawiller, he taunted his opposition with a sensationally judged ride that had followers of our sport glued to their screens as the race unfolded.
Our
Jason Deamer trained galloper had put the writing on the wall at his previous two starts at the track, having run a close-up 4th beaten just 0.26 length, then a last start runner-up by 1.15 lengths. Here again, facing the starter at the Kensington circuit,
Nash Rawiller took bad luck out of the equation with a masterful ride.
ESCAPED showed he can fly!
Nash has partnered
ESCAPED many times and knows our horse to be a free-running type, that has been crying out for 1400m trip. However, circumstances and lack of opportunities in the racing calendar had conspired to deny
ESCAPED the chance to run over such distances at his right grade.
On Wednesday, the race was finally available, and
Jason Deamer set about presenting
ESCAPED in wonderful order for an event we had all been desiring.
When acceptances came out, we had drawn poorly in the outside barrier which is difficult enough, but more so when carrying 58.5kgs. However, with Nash Rawiller on top, who knows our horse so well, this would offset some of this disadvantage.
A natural, on-pace galloper, the speed map showed that he should lead against his peers but there were a couple that map showed would want to go forward and settle in close contact with us.
Nash confirmed his tactics, where his intention was to let him run as he has a high cruising speed and can kick off the front when asked.
As the gates crashed back,
ESCAPED was first to break the line with the Godolphin runner and $5.50 second favourite PROMOTIONS pushing up underneath to try and hold
ESCAPED out wide, and they were joined by ASHIM who tried to join the battle for the lead. Nash allowed the field to settle for the first 250m and then slipped some rein to
ESCAPED who took the invitation with glee and quickly went to the front.
Nash allowed him a little more and the
Dynamic Duo, went
two, then
three, then
four lengths in front as those that were chasing couldn’t match
ESCAPED brilliant early speed.
Passing the
900m, it was such a statement to his peers, that the
racecaller Darren Flindell commented
“so Escaped into this very strong headwind has gone mad, charges clear by 5 lengths.”
800m
Passing the
800m mark, Nash and
ESCAPED had kept up the fast tempo and had established the leading margin at five lengths without being pressured.
Over the next furlong, Nash didn’t fight
ESCAPED to be restrained, but rather let him flow along at a comfortable tempo for
ESCAPED but that was far too hot for his peers, because as they passed the 600m peg,
ESCAPED had increased his lead out to a
staggering 9 lengths over the chasing pack.
600m
Darren Flindell said,
“and coming to the turn Escaped gone further in front, out by 10 lengths mind you!”
Nash knew what he had under saddle and how easy
ESCAPED had run the first 800m of the event, so kept
ESCAPED in an easy rhythm. Those riders chasing began to worry and the race tempo increased as they had to set out to try and catch our galloper.
Turning for home,
ESCAPED had a
7-length break on the field as he was steered out to the centre of the track for the run to the post.
300m
Passing the
300m, ESCAPED was full of running and going strongly, with nothing coming out of the pack to swoop home. The racecaller said
“daring tactics by Nash Rawiller on Escaped and he’s 7 lengths clear.”
It was here NASH asked
ESCAPED for an effort, to
dig tough and hold out the chasers for the
final 200m as our Dynamic runner was starting to get tired.
ESCAPED responded to Nash and the pair fought hard. Only one runner was emerging from the ruck. That was Darleb who was 5 lengths behind at the 200m but broke away from the chasers.
100m
Such was the dominance of the blistering pace
ESCAPED set, Nash had the luxury to look at the big screen infield and knew he was in no danger and allowed
ESCAPED to hit the line under his own stream to post a 2.5 length win with another 2 lengths back to third.
Follow the leader
Darren Flindell followed by saying
“Escaped – Nash Rawiller gets ride of the day, as Escaped has won it by probably 3.”
Then added:
“Nash Rawiller just put the handlebars down right from the start; blow the headwind, and just kept extending the lead, wow that’s been a win there for the Dynamic Syndications crew.”
ESCAPED scores an easy win
When the camera flashed,
ESCAPED stopped the clock at a slick
1:22.85 on a
Soft 5 but worn surface and the first 1000m was run into a strong headwind so the run was statistically awesome, as much as it was pleasing to the eye.
Sky Thoroughbred Central host
Richard Haynes said:
“Escaped – What do they say? Go to the front and improve on your position. Nash Rawiller, Jason Deamer, good on you Jase, watching it at Newcastle, and this fellow, he’s given nothing else a chance. Nash has rated him beautifully, ultimately just let him run, let him roll and he just couldn’t be caught today. They were all chasing a little way out and he (Escaped) was just out there on his lonesome rolling and watching him, you thought he’s just not getting tired, keeping up a very strong gallop, and well done to the Dynamic Syndications Team, the crew and a very happy bunch of owners no doubt, and he wins for the fourth time and a very important city win for him, Darleb runs very well, and Bluff and Bluster does get third.
Fellow commentator
Paul Joice said:
“You have got to love that, a daring front running ride, none better than Nash Rawiller when he can do it, look at him sit down and ride out the winner. He pinched a huge break turning for home and he did it into the wind, and you thought how much was going to be left in the tank? Plenty was the answer, look at him drive clear and win by a space!”
As
ESCAPED and Nash returned to the Winners Stall,
Richard Haynes added:
“He gets a pat from Nash for his trouble, well earned and he’s back in the winners circle and pretty happy with himself Escaped. He holds them off by 2 and a half lengths. A very happy Nash Rawiller and he’s ridden a lot of winners for Dynamic Syndications over the time.
“He (Escaped) was a $180,000 yearling back in the day, and he’s been a really good servant for the owners, he continues he’s only lightly raced for a 5yo, that’s only start number 16, he banks a nice cheque ($22,000) for the owners and more to come on that effort.”
Nash Rawiller was then interviewed by
Chantelle Buckley who asked:
“Nash was that part of the plan or was that just how it panned out?”
Nash responded:
"I just rode the horse how he, just hadn’t been able to get the horse into that situation where he just bowls along at his own cruising speed, I had been saying for 12 months get him to 1400m and dictate our own terms, not being driven mad, and he’ll be winning but we just hadn’t had that situation and even last start I think Tommy (Tom Sherry) rode him too pretty, he tried to hold him up a bit too much and he doesn’t like it. Yeah, he gave a good kick today off that genuine tempo, went right to the line. It was a good effort.”
Chantelle asked:
“You were that far in front could you hear them even coming?”
Nash said:
“No, no, I was happy, quite often you try and get a break and you straighten up a length in front, but when I realised, I put 3 or 4 on them, it was going to take a good one to beat him, and there wasn’t one in the race, I was pretty confident.”
Richard Haynes continued:
“Congratulations to Dynamic Syndications wherever the owners are watching, they would be giving those horses, and that horse in particular, a proper cheer off the couch, wherever you’re watching and we welcome owners back on track very soon hopefully.”
