Randwick trainer John Thompson has sounded an
ominous warning for First Seal's rivals ahead of Saturday's
$400,000 Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m) at Rosehill.
FIRST SEAL
FIRST SEAL (Fastnet Rock / Episode) race career: 15 starts = 5:6:0 and Prizemoney: $1,092,060 inc ATC Flight Stakes Gr1, Tea Rose S., Gr2, Surround S., Gr2, Millie Fox Gr2, 2d Coolmore Stud S., Gr1, Canterbury S., Gr1, Vinery Stud S., Gr1, Spring Champion S. Gr1, Light Finger S., Gr2.
Most impressively on
FIRST SEAL’S resume is the fact she has
twice defeated champion mare WINX – in the Group 1 Flight Stakes and the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes.
FIRST SEAL
The Team at Dynamic will be cheering on
First Seal in each race she runs in, owning a daughter of
FIRST SEAL’S 3/4 sister – SPECIAL EPISODE.
However, it's been a frustrating 12 months for the daughter of
FASTNET ROCK with the trainer battling setback after setback with this high quality mare, who is a Group 1 Winner, 3 time Group 2 Winner and 4 time Group 1 runner-up.
Last spring First Seal's campaign never got going, halted before making it to the races when she was found to be suffering from a
keratinised tissue in a hind hoof which required surgery to be removed.
Earlier this year,
First Seal's career appeared to be back on track when
scoring first-up in the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes before a respectable second in the
Group 1 Canterbury Stakes, which was followed by two below par efforts that had Thompson scratching his head.
"We got some scans done and it showed she'd fractured a splint bone." Thompson said.
"She hadn't shown any signs there was a problem but we knew something wasn't right the way she went in the George Ryder and Doncaster."
This preparation things have been different with Thompson declaring
"I haven't had her going this good for a long time" leading into Saturday's first-up assignment.
"She's a really sound and happy horse," he said.
"She's always been a great trackworker. She does things at home that leaves you shaking your head and nothing has changed in that department.
"She's only had 15 starts so she's lightly-raced for a five-year-old and I think she is a mature mare now. The best could still ahead of her because she is pain free."
Thompson also has top fresh mare Zanbagh in the race.
Thompson said,
"She's got a really good fresh record but I doubt she can beat First Seal."
Dynamic Syndications purchased a filly closely related to FIRST SEAL so will be cheering her on in each race she competes runs in.
