On ANZAC Day FOXY MISS won a 1570m race at Cessnock for Scone based trainer Brett Cavanough.
FOXY MISS wins at Cessnock 25/4 by 8 lengths
On Saturday FOXY MISS won again - this time at over 1600m at the TAB meeting at Coonabarbran.
FOXY MISS wins by 7 lengths on 28/4 at Coonabarbran
Earlier last week, we were unsure whether we would head to Cessnock or not, as we also threw a nomination into a 1600m Class 1 / Maiden Plate at Coonabarabran for the Saturday.
So,
having raced and won at Cessnock by 8 lengths on Wednesday and not being put under any pressure in the run, also acknowledging she had scored against average opposition,
FOXY MISS wouldn’t have blown out a candle upon returning to scale. In fact, she would have worked harder in her final lead in training gallop than she did in winning that race.
Therefore we decided to accept on Thursday morning and look and see what the race was like. Also we would watch how Foxy Miss pulled up from Wednesday’s win, right up to 7:30am scratching time on Saturday morning.
Foxy Miss was bucking her brands off she was feeling so well, so with the mare being rock hard fit, we elected to give her a throw at the stumps and placed her on the truck with stablemates, for a day out at the Coonabarabran Tab Meeting.
Little fish are sweet so with her residual broodmare value in mind, Coonabarabran was the right option.
A phone call from her jockey Billy Cray to Adam Watt in our office on Saturday was full of confidence as the rider reported in that he had received our pre-race instructions that we had wanted to
go forward and dictate the pace from the front.
When we were doing the form, we couldn’t see any pace on paper and believed many wouldn’t get the mile trip. We wanted it to be a genuine run 1600m and to get those chasing her, off the bit by the 600m as they started to give chase.
Watching it unfold was magical to the eye of a racing enthusiast.
Billy Cray got Foxy Miss out cleanly and pushed forward. One other runner tried to go with Foxy Miss for 250m but backed off and after 300m this allowed Foxy Miss to cross to the fence without any work – that was race over.
From that point, Billy had Foxy in a rhythm and 2 lengths clear of the pack. At the 800m, Foxy Miss was slipped a little rein and she trucked away to be 4 lengths clear. At the 500m, Billy gave Foxy Miss a little squeeze and she responded again, now 6 lengths clear.
Being kept together under hands and heels into the straight, at the 350m, Billy gave Foxy Miss permission to go and she dashed away further, to be now 8 lengths in front.
At the 150m Billy looked for any dangers but the jockey would have needed binoculars to see them they were so far behind.
So, Billy allowed Foxy Miss to idle down a long way from the post and despite those chasing her working as hard as they could, Foxy Miss recorded a massive win by 7 lengths x 2.1 lengths with a further 2.6 lengths back to 4th position.
FOXY MISS won Race 4, the Matt Coyle Plumbing Class 1 & Maiden Plate, 1600m, in a time of 1:35.82 in a field of 9 runners.
So in three days, FOXY MISS has won 2 races by a combined total of 15 lengths.
These wins were vital to improve her race record for her broodmare residual upon racetrack retirement.
FOXY MISS is a magnificently bred mare who had always shown ability although frustrating in her first preparation that she hadn’t won when looking the winner in 2 races during that preparations but has now during her second racing prep has taken her career record to 10 starts: 2 wins, 1 second, 1 third.
