So the Dynamic Duo train 5 winners between Flemington (3) and Randwick (2).
Gai Waterhouse with her co-training partner Adrian Bott
We all know who Hall Of Fame Trainer Gai Waterhouse is so who is Adrian Bott?
The easy perception is
Adrian Bott is just along for the ride with a minor recognition in the racebook however without any influence behind the scenes.
He's just a bit part player in the decisions that matter most. Right ?
That perception is totally wrong !
Adrian Bott
"Definitely things have changed," stated Bott, Gai Waterhouse's official training partner of 3 months who has now trained Global Glamour to win 2 Group 1 races and has now had his first Melbourne Cup runner on Tuesday.
"It's a great working relationship. It's a great partnership. That's what it is.
"We like to discuss ideas openly and Gai's very respectful of people's opinions – not just mine – but people around us.
“I'd like to think we've got a very skilful team around us. We certainly take each other's thoughts and opinions on board and respect each other. Everything is open for discussion."
At just 29, Bott is at an age when most in the industry are learning to crawl. The old hard heads won't let them walk yet. However he's just walked into the country's most famous racing dynasty, the
Smith-Waterhouse legendary Tulloch Lodge.
Importantly Adrian now has the keys to drive it for as long as he wants after Bott's father, Tony, sourced Hong Kong clients to invest in the stable.
Basically Adrian was chosen by Waterhouse as the heir to her throne.
"How’s that for pressure?"
"I don't step back and think that too often," Bott said.
"I'm always looking at how we can go forward and improve on our results as opposed to looking too much at the tasks.
"More than anything I feel very privileged to be associated with the calibre of those names in the stable. I would love to see the tradition and history continue – and if I can be a part of that and contribute to that then it would be very rewarding. That's a great word to describe it."
The training partnership's first Melbourne Cup runner, Excess Knowledge, competed last year when seventh in a farcically slow tempo event. He doesn't have that same form of last year and didn’t have the same profile.
"I've been there since the start when this horse arrived," Bott said.
"I had a lot to do with the horse. I don't get too caught up in thinking so much about myself and having my first runner, I just want to deliver results for our owners.
"I think he was prepared the best he could be. We've obviously got the track record of Fiorente going into the Melbourne Cup.
After the dust settled on Flemington and the associated meeting at Randwick on Tuesday afternoon,
the stables results were amazing.
Whilst they missed out on the biggest prize being the Cup,
the Dynamic Duo had won a total of 5 races from 12 runners on the day.
They recorded a winning treble at Flemington and a winning double at Randwick.
It could have been more but for an unlucky run when a nose second in race 6 the Lexus Plate 1400m at Flemington with Prompt Response.
Also to put the icing on the cake, the final event at Randwick the co-trainers produced the quinella.
The day started perfectly for the reinvigorated when taking out the
Ottawa Stakes – a 1000m Group 3 2yo Fillies event with
INVINCIBLE STAR.
Then they went back to back with a winning double as Race 2 the
TAB Trophy 1700m was won by their 4yo mare
SORT AFTER.
Then attention switched to Randwick and in Race 3 over 1400m their 3yo Colt
FIERY TRAIL scored with ease.
Then back to Flemington,
FABRIZIO smashed his rivals in an effortless and dominant win in the Listed James Boag’s Premium Stakes 1800m.
Finally the Dynamic trainers went back to focus on the 1600m Randwick event where their horses finished first and second with
SWEET REDEMPTION & THE BULL.
Congratulations to all the owners and connections of these 5 winners.
It’s easy to become part of the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott team.
