Many horses don’t make the distinction between raceday and practice runs but
Gai Waterhouse’s three-year-old Triple Snitz certainly does and he rose to the occasion at Canterbury on Wednesday.
Competing against a strong group of three-year-olds in a Benchmark 68 Hcp,
the speedy Snitzel gelding Triple Snitz kept his unbeaten record intact with a tenacious win.
With a debut win at Kembla Grange on November 3, the Gai Waterhouse trained
Triple Snitz gave
little indication in trackwork and trials leading into that day that a
first-up victory was in store, let alone back-to-back wins when rising
to a metropolitan race at his this, his second start.
On Wednesday Triple Snitz, went forward
to race on pace, settling in second position early for Tim Clark over
this 1100 metre trip. Stalking the leader Grand Cross (the $1.3m yearling),
as they turned for home Triple Snitz was challenged and headed by the
eventual runner-up but with typical Gai Waterhouse “bone and muscle
polish” he found plenty to beat the favourite Badajoz by a neck.
Triple Snitz was a $160,000 Magic Millions purchase for our good friends
Bruce and Natasha Slade of Round Table Racing from the draft of Marquee Stud.
We congratulate Bruce and Natasha on their promising horse.
Triple Snitz is eligible for the Magic Millions feature 3yo races having been a graduate of that sale.
Gai Waterhouse’s assistant trainer Mark Newnham said of Wednesday’s win:
"He hadn’t shown a lot in his trials or his work prior to Kembla.
"He appeared limited but seemed to gain a lot of confidence from that
first-up win and Gai was happy for him to come to town today.
"He did the chasing and finished off strongly.
"It’s always nice to see a little surprise like that.”
Snitzel is the most represented sire at the upcoming 2016 Magic Millions Yearling Sale with 60 yearlings catalogued.
Gai has a wonderful affinity with the Snitzel progeny and it appears she has another top liner in the making.
