Caulfield Trainer Mick Price has confirmed that his exciting 3yo GRUNT (O’Reilly x Ruqqaya) will be aimed at the Cox Plate in the spring.
The New Zealand-bred colt announced himself as one of the rising stars of Australian racing in the Autumn of 2018 when scoring a resounding win in the
Group 1 Australian Guineas in March, his fourth win from just five starts.
Grunt wins the Gr1 Australian Guineas at Flemington.
GRUNT won the VRC Australian Guineas, Gr 1 (1600m), CS Hayes S., Gr 3 (1400m), SAJC Holdfast Insurance H. (1600m), Werribee Winning Edge Presentations Maiden P. (1400m) and was 3rd VRC Saintly Hall of Fame 2YO Trophy.
Grunt was third on debut as a 2yo at Flemington in May 2017 and was then sent for a spell.
He returned having 4 starts at his second preparation for 4 wins, graduating from maiden company to a Benchmark 64 grade, then straight to Gr3 class at Flemington before culminating in the Gr1 Australian Guineas and then, being sent for a spell.
"I think I'll keep him on a weight-for-age path.” Mick Price said.
“He'll either run in the PB Lawrence (Gr2) or the Memsie (Gr1) first-up and will have a weight-for-age program leading into the Cox Plate."
"Whilst he will be entered in the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup, we will feel our way with him because he has only had five starts, so it would be a little bit ambitious to think he could be a Melbourne Cup warrior this year." Price added:
"Certainly weight-for-age and the Cox Plate will be his target and he has improved a lot physically."
Another top-flight victory would send Grunt's value as a stallion prospect into the stratosphere.
Not only is he a son of multiple Champion New Zealand sire O'REILLY, but he is out of a half-sister to 5-time Gr1 winner and Cox Plate hero OCEAN PARK.
This is a sensational pedigree as there are so many high quality stakes winners in the female family.
It is one of the best families in the NZ Stud Book and it’s no surprise these families keep producing exceptional racehorses.
Dynamic Syndications will be shouting and cheering for GRUNT as the season progresses.
GRUNT is closely related to our brilliant SAVABEEL x FRANKLY (NZ) Brown Filly that we purchased for $180,000 + GST at the Inglis Premier Sale in 2018.
With a philosophy of
“if you want the best – buy it!” this filly claimed the title of the
Most Expensive yearling filly Dynamic Syndications have purchased for syndication and it’s obvious why she had the price tag when you see that her conformation, size and scope matches her absolutely brilliant pedigree.
Dynamic Syndications paid $198,000 ($180,000 + GST) to purchase this super filly
Prior to the 2018 Inglis Premier Sale catalogue being printed, GRUNT was a maiden.
Since then, he has raced on 4 occasions = 4 wins and added a Gr3 and then the Gr1 to the family’s pedigree page.
He would now appear under our filly’s 3rd Dam COURTZA.
With Mick Price confirming GRUNT will target the Cox Plate, it’s a timely reminder that by investing in well-bred fillies, how the families can continue to improve in commercial value through the deeds of relatives.

Therefore, having reviewed the sensational performers of this female family, it’s easy to understand the following proverbs:
“The apple doesn’t roll far from the tree”
“Keep digging where you find gold”
“Keep drilling where you find oil”
“Cream rises to the top”
“History Repeats”
That’s why professional buyers keep investing into genetically proven sources of success. Especially into well-bred fillies because as the family grows in black type, it cements residual value, as there is only a finite supply of quality females available per family and premium prices are often achieved.
Add in the fact that genetically, FRANKLY (NZ) (our filly’s Dam) is by the sire PINS and for this family, SAVABEEL is the outstanding mating.
With Savabeel at the top of the table as far as sires in Australasia, this mating has offered a massive opportunity of producing a significant equine athlete.
Next fact is, that this superior mating has produced a magnificent individual that has excellent size, strength, scope and conformation therefore giving her the necessary building blocks to allow her the opportunity to develop into a superior racehorse in the future.
Add-in the fact the filly passed an extensive pre-sale veterinary inspection where no abnormalities were found. This included: General health check, temperature, pulse, respiration, thoracic auscultation, ophthalmological examination for eye sight, mucous membrane colour, musculature symmetry and conformation, x-rays, endoscope evaluation and blood testing.
Complete the process by engaging the services of Australia’s First Lady of Racing and Hall Of Fame Trainer GAI WATERHOUSE and her co-trainer Adrian Bott to train the filly at Randwick, then we have ticked all the boxes.
Finally, Dynamic Syndications will ensure each owner is up to date with the progress of the filly through as a minimum: weekly reports, also regular phone calls, videos, photos, audio reports, access to weekly stable visits, a weekly newsletter.
This is a perfect example of why our corporate catchphrase is – Race The Best - With The Best.
