Going out at $26.00, punters didn’t consider
Hot Snitzel much of a hope in the
Group 1 BTC Cup on Saturday but thanks to a
magician’s ride by the
man of the hour BLAKE SHINN, the son of
SNITZEL was handy throughout and got all the favours in the run and as they saying goes:
“lucks a fortune.”
SNITZEL - He sired his 6th Gr1 Winner on Saturday
The unstoppable
Blake Shinn produced another superlative ride to earn his
fifth stakes win and second Group 1 win for the day, when the Snitzel gelding claimed the
$500,000 Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben.
HOT SNITZEL held on to defeated the unlucky and fast finishing
Knoydart and the exceptionally disappointing favourite
Our Boy Malachi which gave in meekly.
A $60,000 purchase from the
2010 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale,
Hot Snitzel (Snitzel x Flames Of Paris) was bred by
Arrowfield Stud and consigned under their Bellerive Stud banner.
The 6yo gelding becomes Australia's latest equine millionaire with a record of 8 wins, 5 seconds and 3 thirds from 34 starts for earnings of $1,227,350.
"When you’re hot, you’re hot,” said Shinn.
"I really didn't think we could win this race, neither did Peter.
"I was so impressed by this horse’s enthusiasm. Seven-years-old and gee he tried so hard, it was fantastic,” Shinn said.
New trainer Peter Snowden gave credit where it was rightfully due, to fellow trainer
Gerald Ryan who was the trainer of the horse until just a few weeks prior.
"They came to me in perfect order," he said.
"He'd (Hot Snitzel) had a couple of runs. He was rock-hard fit and probably the time between runs, freshen him right up a bit and had him at his best today.
Snowden also gave full praise to the rider and was quick to credit Shinn’s expertise, saying "I thought he would run well but I then thought these horses would be a touch too quick for him. It was a brilliant ride, it was the difference between winning and losing."
"You couldn't ride that any better. It was a 50 out of 10 ride.”
History shows that in May 2011 Hot Snitzel won the Ken Russell Memorial Classic, becoming the fourth stakes winner for Snitzel.
Almost exactly four years later
Hot Snitzel is Snitzel's sixth Group 1 winner, joining
Sweet Idea, Wandjina, Snitzerland, Shamus Award and Sizzling.
He has won a Group race each season at 2, 3, 4 and 5 and now added a Group 1 to his record.
A horse that is most effective when fresh, which is what he was on Saturday, when six weeks after his previous handy third in the ATC Star Kingdom S. G3 at Rosehill.
Hot Snitzel settled behind the early leader and favourite Our Boy Malachi, then challenged within the final 200 metres and won by three-quarters of a length from a fast-finishing Knoydart with a neck back to Our Boy Malachi, third.
Hot Snitzel is the ninth and last foal out of the Blushing Groom mare Flames of Paris, an unraced half-sister to dual Group 1 winner Park Appeal, the dam of champion miler and leading sire Cape Cross.
Bred by the Arrowfield-Jungle Pocket partnership that has also produced Horse of the Year Weekend Hussler, and Group 1 winners Reaan and Sweet Idea, Hot Snitzel was bought from Arrowfield at the 2010 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale.
Dynamic Syndications purchased 4 yearlings by SNITZEL at the 2015 Yearling Sales.
