Cometh the hour, cometh the Man – or in this case – the Darley sire !
The outcome of the 2015 Golden Slipper will obviously have a huge impact on the life of all concerned with the winner. Perhaps none more so than reigning Golden Slipper favourite VANCOUVER and his sire MEDAGLIA D’ORO.
The grandson of
Sadler’s Wells is one of
three (3) Darley stallions with progeny in the race, alongside
Exceed And Excel with four (4) runners plus two (2) emergencies and Lonhro, the sire of second favourite Exosphere.
Both Exceed And Excel and Lonhro have won General Sires Premierships and sired Golden Slipper Winners previously guaranteeing their futures and success.
For Medaglia D’Oro it is literally his “Golden Opportunity” to prove himself a Top Ten Sire and even potentially a Champion Sire in the Southern Hemisphere to match his deeds in the Northern Hemisphere.
Darley General Manager Henry Plumtree said “Golden Slipper Day is a pivotal day in the 2yo dynamics but I believe he’s done enough now to say he is a pretty serious stallion in the older ranks”.
We didn’t bring him down here to add to our 2yo sire ranks because we already had Exceed And Excel and Lonhro who have both produced Slipper winners and you wouldn’t have thought a grandson of Sadler’s Wells would be the obvious choice.”
“He’s an extraordinary stallion. He gets big horses who have plenty of scope, they’ve also got amazing temperaments and that’s what Gai’s horse Vancouver has got - and that got him to the Slipper” said Plumtree.
Medaglia D’oro commanded a First Season service fee of $88,000 and covered a conservative book of 97 mares with only a minority of coverings to outside mares. Last season, Medaglia D’Oro stood at $55,000 and served 148 mares.
Plumtree said “The difficulty in bringing a horse like Medaglia D’Oro down to Australia in that he is very, very valuable commodity in the Northern Hemisphere and Darley aren’t the sole owner of him”.
“He does command a large service fee in the USA and we had to ensure his value remained up. The market was a little bit conservative about him to begin with and that’s predictable, with the conservative Australian Buying bench.”
“I thought the first group of yearlings to sold extraordinarily well and the market embraced them because they are such lovely types and that’s one distinguishing thing about the sire. He throws into his progeny a lot of bone and a lot of bulk.” Plumtree said.

MEDAGLIA ' DORO - Sire TRICK OF LIGHT - Dam
Dynamic Syndications and Gai Waterhouse at the Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale identified a magnificent MEDAGLIA D’ORO filly from the Group 2 Winner TRICK OF LIGHT which we purchased from leading Victorian breeder Rick Jamison’s Gilgai Farm (breeder of Black Caviar).
She has a wonderful black type family with a massive 235 Stakes Performers in the 4 Dams extended pedigree.
Most importantly to us, she is a wonderful type of individual with excellent conformation. She is also bred on the same MEDAGLIA D’ORO / DANEHILL Cross as VANCOUVER and NOSTRADAMUS and there are 74 stakes winners bred on the extended Sadler’s Wells / Danzig cross including World Champion – FRANKEL.
Our filly on her female pedigree is also closely related to the 2014 World Champion Female – CLOSE HATCH.
