Cleverly named filly Global Glamour trained by legendary Hall Of Fame Trainer GAI WATERHOUSE and her newly appointed co-trainer Adrian Bott, sent her syndicate of lady owners into raptures when she scored a dashing breakthrough win in the Group One Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick.
Tim Clark led all the way on Global Glamour in the $500,000, Group 1 Sydney Airport Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday to give trainer
Gai Waterhouse her ninth win in the race which she first won over 20 years ago with Assertive Lass.
Clark sent the lightly raced Star Witness filly to the front from the barriers and he was prepared to be the front person into the stiff westerly wind blowing across the top straight and it did not hinder them for one moment.
Blake Shinn on the $2.10 favourite Yankee Rose settled at the rear for the cover and made his move with 600m to run. However, the leader had no intention of being caught and from the 325m Clark stepped up the tempo on Global Glamour.
Again the postage stamp sized Yankee Rose, despite having been given a top ride, could not close the gap on the Gai Waterhouse trained Global Glamour and a half-length was the difference on the line. Sezanne (More Than Ready) was third and Skylight Glow fourth.
The time was 1.34.73 on the Good 3 rate track with the final 600m in 34.90.
It was Hall of Fame trainer Gai Waterhouse’s 135th Group 1 win in her legendary career.
However and most importantly, it was her first Group 1 win with her new training partner Adrian Bott.
Global Glamour provided the feel good story of the day when she held out Yankee Rose for a celebrated win.
"It is hard to describe," co-trainer Adrian Bott said.
"It is a very good feeling and one I will cherish forever," as Gai’s new co-trainer tasted his first trip to the winner’s circle as a Group 1 Winning Trainer.
“It is a syndicate of women worldwide hence the name Global Glamour so there was a lot of pressure going into today’s race.
“The big challenge today was to get her to relax. She has been her own worst enemy the last two starts. It wasn’t a surprise to see her do that today, we have known she has always had the ability,” he said.
Gai Waterhouse said Adrian had suggested the barrier blanket for the filly, which got the jump to the front and when Tim Clark was able to get her to settle it was always going to be hard to beat.
Gai continued "We are a team and we had to get her energy level down and Adrian thought a barrier blanket would help her in the gates,"
"Our barrier staff worked hard on her and we got her to show her best on this day. I'm delighted that the team won a group 1 together and there are going to be more." Waterhouse said.
It was a perfect ride and result for internationally proven jockey Tim Clark.
"It has been a while since I have been in the Group One winner's stall," Clark said. "It is a great feeling."
“The start was all important today. It was a masterstroke by Gai and Adrian to put the barrier blanket on her. It helped keep her calm.
“She began pretty well and in the small field I was able to control it. Even though she was still going a bit keen within herself through the run she wasn’t going that quick. It allowed her to have a great turn of foot. When she topped the rise she quickened really well and I thought it would take a good one to run me down. Thankfully there wasn’t and she was too strong.” he said.
Owned by 37 women spread over seven countries, Global Glamour is the new pin up girl for the world first female ownership promotion, Magic Millions Racing Women.
"It's like a dream come true," one of the syndicate members Anna Seitz beamed from her Kentucky base after cheering home her star racehorse at about 1.30am.
"We are just having the best fun. We thought if she could run third and be Group One placed it would be incredible - but to win, it's amazing."
While connections ponder the immediate future for Global Glamour, her international owners are organising for the Flight Stakes trophy to fly to each country so all owners can get photos with the Group One prize!
It could be said that Tulloch Lodge owns the Flight Stakes. Tommy Smith won 13, Gai Waterhouse eight in her own right and now the new partnership of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott has its first.
