Chris Waller-trained Foreteller stormed home late to score narrow victory over Melbourne Cup favourite Puissance De Lune in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Saturday afternoon.
Puissance De Lune looked as though he had the race won when he hit the front with 100 metres left to run but Foreteller flashed home in the concluding stages to win his second Group 1 event.
Waller talked down Foreteller’s chances in the lead-up to the race but was thrilled that the decision to bring him to Melbourne, rather than stay in Sydney for the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m), had paid off.
“We have a few horses that we could have sent down but we chose the right one,” Waller said after the race.
“We had the right horse fit on the day and he pulled off a big win, which is great for the whole team.”
“Today he had the chance to follow a horse in the run and the only thing that I said to Craig Newitt was don’t go too early.
“He angled him out at the right time and it looked like he was going to win at the 200 metre mark but I thought oh gee in the last 100 and it got very interesting.”
Craig Newitt was riding Foreteller for the first time and gave him a fabulous run into the race with a perfectly timed ride.
“There was only one horse that I wanted to follow in the run,” Newitt said after the race.
“My bloke travelled and Chris stressed not to move on him until the last possible moment.
“To the grey horses credit he kept finding but my bloke was too strong.
“It was a really good win, he had to reel off some good times and really tough it out.
“Whatever he runs in now I think that he will be very competitive.”
Waller is yet to decide on a 2013 Spring Racing Carnival path for Foreteller, with the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m), Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) and Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) all on the agenda.
Chris Waller continues to go from strength to strength in recent years and Dynamic Syndications are delighted to be supporting his stable in a big way.
