There have been
BIG RESULTS for Super
COOLMORE STUD Sire
HIGH CHAPARRAL over the past few days.
HIGH CHAPARRAL
The first is that it looks like
HIGH CHAPARRAL has produced another
“BIG HORSE” on the international stage after his Dermot Weld trained
FREE EAGLE became the sire’s
58th Stakes Winner won the Gr3 1400m first up from a spell by a big margin.
FREE EAGLE
Free Eagle (3c High Chaparral-Polished Gem, by Danehill) blew away his opposition in the
G3 KPMG Enterprise Stakes at Leopardstown (IRE) 10 days ago when running out a brilliant
seven-length winner.
The Moyglare Stud home-bred was having a belated first start of the season but looks a major contender for top honours this year after this eye-catching victory under Pat Smullen.
The
High Chaparral colt had been
Derby bound until he had an extended spell. Having been as short as 16-1 to win the
English Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) earlier in the year, the Dermot Weld-trained colt suffered a setback after fracturing a tibia in the spring and that put an end to his Classic hopes.
He made amends on Saturday, however, romping to the most straightforward of successes to defeat Elleval (Kodiac) by seven lengths, with Chance To Dance (Teofilo) a further half a length away in third.
Regarding this Enterprise Stakes win his happy go lucky trainer was upbeat.
“He did it very impressively and it seems it is a case of what might have been (regarding his layoff) but such is life,” trainer
Dermot Weld said. “He’s come back nicely and we’ll see how he comes out of it.”
“He’s very laid back and it was difficult enough to get him as fit as I wanted for today but he was pretty right. He should improve, naturally and he’ll have one more run and the Gr1 British Champion Stakes looks the logical race.”
Here he may get the chance to test himself against the dual Derby winner Australia (Galileo) and Saturday’s English St Leger (Gr 1, 1m6f) winner Kingston Hill (Mastercraftsman).
“He’s just a very good horse and he did it very very well. It’s just a worry now that he stays sound and right.”
“He was stood in his box for 12 weeks. Today was the very first day that it was practical to run and it was the right race to bring him back in.”
“Losing him was a huge blow but thank God he’s back and Pat was thrilled with him.”
In winning,
Free Eagle became the 58th Stakes Winner (10 Gr1) for his sire, High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells).
TORONADO
The second announcement to hit the headlines in the past few days for
HIGH CHAPARRAL was when his
TOP CLASS MILER – TORONADO another High Quality son of
HIGH CHAPARRAL.
His owner
Sheikh Joaan's Al Shaqab Racing, have announced
Toronado will take up
Stallion Duties at the British National Stud.
A brilliant performer from the word go,
TORONADO showed a high level of form as a two-year-old landing three races with his biggest success coming in the
Gr2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster.
Bought as a yearling for €55,000
Toronado was on sold in a private deal by Sheikh Joaan in the March of his three-year-old season.
Following a runaway success in the Craven Stakes, Toronado finished fourth in the Gr1 2,000 Guineas behind Dawn Approach, but narrowed the gap on Jim Bolger's charge in the Gr1 St James's Palace Stakes, going down by a short-head.
Toronado reversed the form with Dawn Approach in the 'Duel on the Downs' in the Gr1 Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood to win by half a length.
Toronado landed his second Gr1 on his seasonal debut in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.
He was last seen at
Longchamp this month, finishing a head second to Charm Spirit in the Prix du Moulin Gr1 and could bid for further top-flight glory in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot next month.
Ben Sangster, chairman of the National Stud, said: "Myself and the senior steward Roger Weatherby are thrilled that such a high-class horse will be retiring for the 2015 season to the National Stud and are most grateful to His Excellency Sheikh Joaan for his wonderful gesture to support the British breeding industry.
"This is such a tremendous opportunity for breeders, who I'm sure will be keen to send high quality mares to this very special horse."
"Looking closely at both Toronado's pedigree and conformation he is hugely exciting. Being by the international leading sire High Chaparral he looks perfect for a wide range of mares including those who descend from the Danzig line.”
"Having the powerful build of a very fast horse and being a Group-winning unbeaten two-year-old, Toronado will really appeal to the commercial market. As a European champion miler he will also be important to owner breeders who are aiming to breed a Classic prospect."
His sire High Chaparral is at Coolmore Stud where he is standing for a Service Fee of $60,500 in 2014.
Two of High Chaparral's best sons in So You Think (trained by Bart Cummings) and It’s A Dundeel are also now at stud.
The third bit of news concerns
COOLMORE STUD who unveiled another highly promising 3yo filly today when
BALLET SUITE accounted for a strong field at Bendigo.
The daughter of
HIGH CHAPARRAL according
to her rider
Glen Boss "she is still a work in progress but is a real
nice filly going forward." Her trainer
Mark Kavanagh was upbeat about
her prospects over the Spring. "she's a nice filly up at the right time
that can run a trip. We'll be aiming for something longer and something
better" (VRC Oaks).
DYNAMIC SYNDICATIONS have a few shares remaining in a magnificent colt by
HIGH CHAPARRAL x QUEEN'S SUITE.
Being trained by the
CUPS KING - BART & JAMES CUMMINGS this colt is also being aimed at the
Classics and Cups.
