The Darren Smith trained IDLE CHAT made it a simple exercise gallop but still recorded an easy 3 length victory at Newcastle on Sunday.
IDLE CHAT (More Than Ready / All The Goss by Quest For Fame) was having just her fourth race start but was first up from a spell. At her first preparation IDLE CHAT won on debut at Gosford over 1000m and despite being eligible for a class 1 event, she made it a one act affair in a Class 2 900m event.
Ridden by top rider Grant Buckley, the filly won race 7 the BMG Aviation Class 2 Hcp on a Heavy 8 track recording a 3 length x ½ len win in 52.84 and a last 600m of 34.90.
The speed map had shown there was likely to be a lot of pace in this event and having drawn barrier 7 of a field of 8 the plan was to allow the mare to find her balance early and get into a rhythm tracking the speed before heading out to the centre of the track on turning.
The plan worked to perfection. IDLE CHAT jumped away well but was restrained and drifted back to the tail of the field 3 deep.
Then Grant allowed her to work up 4 deep but with cover as they approached the home turn. As they swung for home, Grant angled off heels 5 deep, to be the widest runner entering the straight. After 50m he allowed the mare to roll up and eye-ball the $170 favourite and leader and then at the 250m shook the reigns and the mare bounded away.
At the 100m Grant gave her a couple of love taps to keep her mind on the job and as soon as that occurred, IDLE CHAT found another gear and put another length on the field. Then over the final 50m she was allowed to coast to the post for an effortless win.
IDLE CHAT has now raced on 4 occasions fo 2 wins. She has won first up at both Gosford over 1000m and Newcastle over 900m.
She has an exciting turn of foot and can let down very quickly which is vital in a sprinting mare to have the ability to sit off them and dash home.
Grant Buckley reported to Darren that he felt he was on the winner after they had run just 100m. He stated they had a lap full of horse and was travelling sweetly. His biggest concern was he didn’t want to get to the front too early and she switch off. However that was not a concern as the mare careered away for an emphatic win.
IDLE CHAT was purchased from Vendor GERRY HARVEY from the draft of Westbury Stud at the NZ Yearling Sales.
Gerry liked the filly enough to buy back into her and became part of the following group of co-owners.
