An interesting aspects of the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale is always the performance of first crop sires and this year it was
Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible's first son to go to stud), that finished on top by average for three or more sold.
Darley based
Brazen Beau achieved the highest average with six yearlings averaging $351,667. His top seller was the filly from Pretty Penny that made
$700,000 for Coolmore when secured by McEvoy Mitchell Racing.
Newgate Farm's
Deep Field has been a big player at all the major sales this year and was next on the list with eight yearlings averaging
$295,000. His best result was Segenhoe Stud's colt from Group 2 winner Jolie Bay that made
$530,000.
Coolmore's
Rubick, also posted a great result for Edinglassie Stud when his filly from My Amelia sold for
$420,000 to Paul Perry.
Whilst another with a terrific result was Arrowfield’s
Olympic Glory when he recorded a sale of
$400,000 for a filly from Gr3 Winner Let’s Make Adeal.
First season sires increasingly find it hard to gain traction at Inglis Easter where the big buyers focus on the progeny of the big four –
Snitzel, Fastnet Rock, I Am Invincible, Savabeel and Redoute's Choice. To make an impact you need a seriously good individual.
However, it’s when you look at the total yearling sales results across all the sales that buyers gain a clearer picture as to how the first crop sires were received.
In 2018, there were
28 commercial first crop sires with yearlings available at the sales. It was a true smorgasbord of race performance, conformation and commerciality that blended with the pedigrees of the broodmares that created some brilliant yearlings.
There is little doubt that there is an art in selecting first crop sires that may go on to be champion sires. The allure of the first crop sire is that in most instances, they are affordable when compared to progeny by the top end of the market such as the
Snitzel’s Fastnet Rock, Redoute’s Choice, Savabeel, I Am Invincible, etc.
The top 20 new sires by yearling averages in 2018 were:

These were stallions that we considered were brilliant racehorses in their own right but also had to have a strong commercial pedigree to support them.
