Dreams, drama’s, passions and ability were all a mixture of a Dynamic win by the very promising 3yo filly LAUGHING, the Magic Millions graduate who looks to have a very bright racetrack future to match a wonderful Black Type pedigree.
Congratulations to the Dynamic Team that race

At Warwick Farm on Wednesday afternoon, the Gerald Ryan trained LAUGHING won race 3 the Vili’s Pies Handicap, 1100m 3yo Maiden Handicap. Ridden by boom apprentice Jenny Duggan, LAUGHING scored in the unbelievable time of 1:03.57 seconds. That smashed the CLASS RECORED by a whopping 0.94 seconds. That’s the equivalent of 7 lengths ! The previous record of 1:04.51 had been set over 7 years earlier by Tintoretto on the 20/9/2005.
That certainly didn’t surprise us at Dynamic as the filly had run unbelievably quick times on debut on a slow track and simply a repeat of that effort was always going to make her hard to beat here.
The view the rest of the field saw of LAUGHING during the race !
On debut she lumped 59.0kgs, so up against the boys here she gets 2.0kgs relief. Then we grabbed the use of boom apprentice Jenny Duggan and with her 3.0kgs claim that dropped Laughing's weight to a luxury 54.0kgs. We felt at that level she would be exceptionally well in at 2.0kgs under the limit and appeared to us a weighted certainty. That’s what it proved to be.
Even though we had drawn awkwardly in barrier 9 in the big field, we were confident that she would overcome that difficulty. Our instructions were simple enough. Be positive and lead if you can unless something else goes stupid and wants to drag race you. If so, take a sit off it. With the weight pull we want to be in a forward position and wait as long as possible into the straight before pushing the afterburners and with the pull in the weights, they won’t be able to sprint with you.
The perfect race was ridden by one of the most astute apprentice’s I have seen in many years. She rode the ideal race and landed the money and smashed the Class Record without fully extending LAUGHING in the race. It was beautiful to behold.
This proved a big day for Dynamic Syndications having earlier won race 1 on the programme with MASTERSTROKE.
Jenny returned to the Winner’s Circle and was full of praise for our filly. She was so impressed with her natural gate speed and then her tractability. She explained that she copped a fair bit of buffeting in the run by the third placed Ptolemy and despite that Laughing remained focused and competitive and dug deep to score. Importantly Jenny felt confident the filly wants more ground the way she hit the line so well.
Whilst we do not like getting to far ahead of ourselves, one thing it did confirm – which is what we always assumed – She can run !
We are so happy about this filly and absolutely delighted for her team of owners.
This particular Dynamic team has been to the depths of despair and now has a bright future to look forward too.
This filly was purchased by Dynamic Syndications at the Magic Millions sale on the Gold Coast in 2011 from Arrowfield Stud.
LAUGHING - Distorted Humor (USA) / Forest City Girl (USA) as a yearling at the sales
She was sent to the spelling farm and then broke-in very nicely. She was spelled and came back into work and then went into Gerald Ryan’s stables getting ready to have a crack at the Magic Millions. However Gerald said she had a lot of ability but was “a quirky filly in the stables”. Some days she would act like a vacuum in the feed tin and other days she would eat nothing for 2-3 days. It was like she was struggling with a stomach condition. We had her checked out for stomach ulcers but that wasn’t the problem. Finally we couldn’t find an obvious issue and her eating became more distressed. We gave up on the preparation and returned her to the paddock for a few months. We put it down to immaturity and she needed extra time.
We brought her back into pre-training just on the approach to Easter this year. However she had only done a couple of days when on Easter Friday, she was reported as having colic and was struggling. The symptoms came and went several times over the next 48 hours. However at 5:00am on Easter Sunday she was prepped for emergency surgery. The symptoms gave every indication she was suffering from colic but all the clinical signs suggested something more sinister was happening.
Sydney University Vet Hospital contacted us stating that if they didn’t operate immediately the filly would be dead within the hour. The surgery went straight ahead and within moments the problem was discovered.
The photo below is self explanatory:
Operation a Success - Foreign Matter removed from LAUGHING
This foreign matter was removed from the colon of the filly. It was identified as a fibrous solid that had become compacted in the colon and unable to be passed through the horse’s digestive system. It was thought to be either a length of hay net or hay bailing twine or a piece of torn horse rug that the horse had swallowed anywhere from 6 to 18 months earlier which had become caught and compacted with gravel stones and waste by-product. It had eventually become so large nothing was passing through the filly’s system and had started to turn septic.
LAUGHING was in intensive care for several days but survived thanks to the acute care she received by the team at Sydney University Vet Hospital. The prognosis for a full return to health was very high now the foreign matter had been removed from her system.
If it was not for the vigilance of the team at Oak Ridge and Wild Oaks spelling farm and then the around the clock care by the Vet Hospital, LAUGHING would not have made it.
LAUGHING - ready to return to Gerald Ryan 12 weeks ago
Here we are just 6 months later and LAUGHING has shown her loyal owners that the costs and efforts of keeping her alive was well worth it.
Whatever the future holds, these owners and LAUGHING deserve every bit of success this exciting prospect may achieve.
