Finding a successful racehorse to purchase as a yearling is an art form that takes years to develop! There is certainly a lot more to buying a champion then arriving on the day and putting your hand up. Having a keen eye to see if a horse is athletic, conformationally sound and a worthy purchase on looks is only part of the battle. Every time we purchase a horse here at Dynamic, a vast amount of work is put in. Managing Director Dean Watt has learnt over his 30 years in the industry what is needed to give you the best chance at success. Extensive research has to be done looking at both the sire and dam, information has to be complied to see if the cross is likely to produce a winner, an estimation has to be made into what distance the certain horse is likely to run and therefore what races we will target among many other factors. Even with all those things in your favour there is no guarantee of racetrack success however it does significantly improve your chances as is seen in our record over the last 7 years.
Over the last 30 years, Dean Watt has selected some of the finest racehorses.
At Dynamic, we make sure we put in the long hours and hard work to ensure that you get all these things in your favour and once again it is paying dividends. Redoute’s Choice mare, Lady of Choice was one such dam that we identified as having the potential to produce quality race horses and she hasn’t let us down to date. In 2011, we purchased a lovely colt at the Sydney Easter Yearling Sales out of Lady of Choice and by Lonhro for just $65,000. It was specifically bred on the Lonhro – Danehill cross which rated an A+++, the highest possible ratings cross. This cross has sired a plethora of stakes winners including Benfica, Obsequious, Pinwheel and recent Gr3 winner in WA, Eight Till Late.
Specific Choice was a $65,000 as a yearling
Specific Choice, as he has now been named, now raced on three occassions and shown that he has all the makings of a stakes quality galloper. Following a win and close up 2nd in his first two starts, he finished a respectable 5th on the weekend despite having no luck and still being short of his desired distance. Chris Waller has a good opinion of the horse and has indicated that he is still very much learning his trade. We are hopeful to see Specific Choice progress through the grades over the coming months and give just reward for his patient owners.
Specific Choice showed he is a nice horse in the making winning on debut
Specific Choice was not the only colt out of Lady of Choice to run on the weekend! Direct Charge (Charge Forward – Lady of Choice) produced a sensational effort to win the Group III VRC Maribyrnong Plate at Flemington on Saturday. Having just his third race start, he travelled smoothly up on the pace for Steven Arnold and although headed with a furlong to run, he fought on strongly to draw clear and win by half a head.
Direct Charge is a half-brother to our lovely colt and was a $105,000 purchase at the 2012 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. Direct Charge has already won over $100,000 in prizemoney and has now added all important black type to the pedigree page. Like Specific Choice, Direct Charge was produced on a proven cross which rated the highest possible rating, an A+++. The Red Ransom – Danehill cross has seen a series of stakes winners including Red Dazzler, Headway and recently Urban Groove who won the LR Reginald Allen during the 2012 Sydney Spring Carnival.
Direct Charge became the first stakes winner out of Lady of Choice on Saturday
Lady of Choice has now produced three horses to race all of whom have won on track. It is a credit to the whole Dynamic team for the effort and hard work that they put in when originally selecting Specific Choice at the 2011 Easter Yearling Sales. Lady of Choice has shown to be a very good mare in the breeding barn and the price of her offspring is sure to rise in the coming years.
Dynamic are heading over to the Ready to Run sales at Karaka in New Zealand next week to hopefully find another bargain buy on a proven cross. We have already shortlisted a number of lots and can’t wait to get over there and see what New Zealand have to offer. For more information on both the upcoming sales and what Dynamic are looking at as well as Specific Choice and his relations, stay tuned to the Dynamic website.
